Colorado Photonics Industry Association
Quarterly Meeting
"Front Range Optics Apprenticeship Program Brainstorming"

Meeting Date:
Thursday
August 27
3:00 - 6:00 pm

As part of the program, attendees will learn about the capabilities of REO through a presentation and tour of REO facilities.

What is now REO originally formed in 1980 as the electro-optics division of Particle Measuring Systems.  REO was established as a separate company in 1993 to utilize expertise in the manufacture of HeNe lasers, superpolished optical surfaces and high performance thin film coatings using ion beam sputtering technology.

Today, REO is a volume manufacturer of high precision thin film coatings, optics and optomechanical assemblies for the ultraviolet through the long-wave infrared. The company also produces high performance HeNe lasers. Markets served include semiconductor process equipment, aerospace and defense systems, telecommuni-cations, laser manufacturers, laser based materials processing and life sciences instrumentation.

Company capabilities include substantial design and engineering resources, comprehensive optical fabrication and coating capabilities, advanced assembly technology and an extensive in-house metrology lab.

"Front Range Optics Apprenticeship Program - Brainstorming"

REO has started down a path to define an optics apprenticeship program to ensure that we will have the skilled labor that we will need to meet growing business demands.  These skills are not typically taught in any formal educational environment.

During this session REO will introduce the program concept to the local optics community and request feedback. Participation of the local optics community will help to make this initiative more viable. The program will consist of a blend of on the job training as well as job related classroom instruction at a community college.

Throughout the three year program, apprentices will be exposed to optics fabrication, coating, machining, assembly, and metrology to help them determine the optics career path that is the best fit for them.

The program would be submitted to The Department of Labor for certification and outreach would need to be developed for the local educational community to increase awareness.  REO will present the current status and look for broader input and participation in order to finalize the initiative.

Speaker Bios:

Paul Kelly, Chief Executive Officer and President, REO
