Learn More about Proposed Changes in ITAR

If you missed the CPIA quarterly meeting last week at GE-Lighting, you may want to follow up on some of the information.

Many thanks to Stephen Anderson, Industry & Market Strategist at SPIE, for his presentation of current information about the number of companies, jobs and revenues generated from photonics components in various countries. He has offered to make his slides available on request. Please send your email request directly to Stephen.

His presentation also touched on the comment period of the proposed rule updating the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which controls the export and import of defense-related articles - specifically Category XII of the U.S. Munitions List. The proposed rule will also affect the Commerce Control List. Category XII includes optics, photonic laser commodities, and components.

The 60 day comment period for you to voice your opinions on the proposed changes will end July 6.

Here are some resources to help you understand these changes and prepare your comments:

Technical Tutorials Available

SPIE has launched a new peer-reviewed e-book series beginning with tutorials on image resolution, fiber optics, and logistics of setting up a laser lab. The new series fills a gap between longer works and single papers, and provides an accessible resource for professionals throughout the field. E-books in the Spotlights series are available for mobile devices and as downloadable PDFs. They are also accessible to institutional users via the SPIE Digital Library.
