Summer has transitioned into autumn. With the seasonal change, comes a shift in focus for people and hospices alike. The traditional seasonal and school calendar continues to impact us as we shift gears.
During the summer months my street was full of activity in the evenings. Kids on bikes, scooters and electric cars took over the street while parents talked and visited until the sky grew dark.
But, once school was back in session those late evening activities ceased. It's back to the school calendar routine.
And, so it is with most hospices. Fall often brings back a focus on recruitment activities and training.
Whether you advertise in newspapers, use on-line sources or participate in health fairs or local mall or college fairs, it is important to document your efforts. Keep a file and record any type of recruitment efforts you engage in. Include a copy of ads or flyers. Documentation of recruitment is an important step that can easily be forgotten, but one that can make the difference if a surveyor asks to see what you are doing regarding recruitment.
418.78(c) Standard: Recruiting and retaining
The hospice must document and demonstrate viable and ongoing efforts to recruit and retain volunteers.
|
And, please remember to also record and document your efforts regarding retention.
Our annual Volunteer Review can be part of your plan as it provides opportunity for volunteers to share their needs and challenges over the past year. Since we create a new edition in a new color annually, long term volunteers get a fresh perspective and you get credit for RETENTION!

Of course, training is the result of a good push for recruitment. Whether you use our DVDs in class, or our On-Line Portal to save class time - the result is the same. Each student is exposed to the same core, foundational information. The Coordinator is then able to focus on relationships, interaction, and building upon our foundation in order to meet their particular State or licensing standards.
Recruitment is up to you! But, we can help meet CMS Standards for Training and Retention.
