Older and Newer Houses Need Weather-stripping

weather-stripping Before the weather totally closes in on the greater Cleveland area, now is a great time to check your home's weather-stripping.

Weather-stripping a home to reduce cold-air infiltration and heat loss is an inexpensive and effective way to improve comfort and cut fuel bills. Most older homes and many newer ones will benefit from some new weather-stripping; even if the homes were previously weatherstripped. Old materials sometimes deteriorate, losing effectiveness, and, if installed a few years ago may have dried out, loosened, or lost shape and decrease its performance.

Install Smoke Alarms

The Home Safety Council found that fires and burns are the third-leading cause of unintentional home injury and deaths and the leading cause for children ages 1 to 14.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially where people sleep.
  • Smoke rises, so smoke alarms should be mounted high on walls or ceiling, away from corners or vents.
  • If your alarm is more than 10 years old, get a new one.
  • Consider buying a combination photoelectric and ionization smoke alarm which senses different types of fires.
  • Test alarms monthly by pushing the test button until you hear a loud noise.
  • Replace batteries once per year.
  • Have a fire-plan in place so you know exactly what to do if an alarm goes off.
Tips & Tricks

Refrigerator Cleaner

To eliminate odors in your refrigerator, combine 2 quarts warm water with 2 tablespoons baking soda.  Wipe down all surfaces to freshen.  For spills, use the baking soda as a scouring power and then wipe with a damp cloth.

Create a Record

When buying a new product, fill out and return the registration/warranty car or register online allowing the manufacturer to contact you regarding recalls.

Keep Toxins Out

Placing a mat at the front and back doors can cut the amount of pesticide residue and dirt tracked inside by 25 percent.

Never Hurts to Ask

According to AARP, a reduction of up to 10% is often available on homeowner insurance for people 55-plus because they may spend more time at home and can better monitor and maintain their property.
