Increasing Insulation Effectiveness

Types of Insulation / Where to Add Insulation

Insulation Locations Houses loose and gain energy is through the movement of heat through solid objects such as walls, floors , and ceilings. Heat always moves toward colder air in an attempt to equalize the temperature. Insulation is helpful because it traps tiny pockets of air which retard the transfer of heat. Insulation won't stop heat entirely, but it will slow it down.

Insulation's effectiveness is tested by its R- value, its ability to resist the heat flow from warmer to cooler areas. The higher the R- value, the more effective the insulation. It is important to remember that a material's insulating ability is based on R- value, not thickness.

Social Security Numbers

A new state law in New York aimed at reducing identity theft makes it illegal for individuals or businesses to request your Social Security number except for certain circumstances, however the safeguards are also applicable to all Ohioans.

Tips & Tricks

Dust Mites
After a year of your holiday mementos sitting in the basement or attic, they are often crawling with dust mites.  If an item is washable, clean it in hot water.  If it cannot get wet or is heat-sensitive, stick it in a plastic bag and freeze for 3 - 5 hours.  Dust mites often can't survive temperature extremes and lack of air.

Fan Fair
An easy way to trim heating costs is to turn on your ceiling fan in reverse.  A slow clockwise motion will push hot air down into the room along walls and help warm your home more efficiently.

How to Drain a Hot Water Tank
Preventative Maintenance Tip
  • Be sure to shut off the water, electricity and gas.
  • Shut the cold-water supply valve.
  • Open a hot-water faucet nearby and let it run dry.
  • Attach one end of a garden hose to the drain valve near the base of the heater; run it outdoors or into a drain or sink that's on a lower level. Then open the valve.
  • When the tank is empty, open the cold-water supply valve and refill the tank until water flows from an open facet before turning the heater back on.
