LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear ,

Mark Your Calendars for These November Dates...

November brings the beginning of winter, with cold weather and barren trees. But it is truly springtime for the St. Louis film community, for it is the month of the St. Louis International Film Festival (November 14-24) -- the biggest local film event of the year.

More on that below, but first I want to call your attention to our November MCA meeting, on November 13, the day before the film festival starts. This will be our "State of the Industry" meeting. This is always one of our more popular meetings -- and a great place to network, share your ideas about improving our industry, and even air your grievances. I would especially urge you to attend this meeting. Details are in the article below.

Next is the St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF), which starts the day after our meeting. I just returned from the Chicago International Film Festival and I would say that ours beats theirs by a mile. You'll have more high-quality films to choose from (370 vs.180), better weather, and you won't have to pay $15 to park for 4 hours, just to see a movie (and that's with validated parking!). I had a great time during my brief visit to the Chicago International Film Festival, but seeing what they have made me appreciate our local film festival even more.

There is something for everyone at SLIFF -- foreign and indie films you'll never see anywhere else in St. Louis; pre-release previews of major studio films; great seminars and opportunities for networking with local and visiting filmmakers; some of our best, home-grown films from local filmmakers; and even a bunch of free stuff for cheapskates like me (including the must-attend closing night party, with free Stella Artois beer and Skinny Girl wine).

Go to the SLIFF web site, get a schedule, volunteer, and plan out your November!!

NEXT MCA MEETING NOVEMBER 13 -- STATE OF THE INDUSTRY

The Missouri film tax credit disappears at the end of this month. However, as we go to press a major studio film, "Gone Girl," starring Ben Affleck and produced by Reese Witherspoon, is shooting in Cape Girardeau, employing dozens of locals. Another major film is planning to come to St. Louis next year. Local indie filmmakers are as active as ever!

At the November meeting of the MCA-i, St. Louis Chapter, we'll look at how the local production industry is doing, how you can get more involved, and plans for future legislation that will help the industry. We'll also want to get your input on ways that the industry can be improved.

We hope you can join us for this two-way conversation about the latest developments in the industry, brainstorming the potential and the possibilities for our region as a filmmaking mecca.

The meeting will be take place at Reel Impact's brand-new spacious studio. Founded by Adam Crosley in 1986, Reel Impact is known for its award-winning, high-impact corporate videos, television commercials, full-service live event productions, interactive communications, and new media strategies for clients around-the-country.
