LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear ,

THE JURY HAS RETURNED ... AND THE VERDICT IS IN ...

No -- this isn't yet another article about the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case, but the recent verdict of another  jury:   the jury panel's selections from last month's St. Louis Filmmaker's Showcase.   Unlike the jury decisions in our legal system, there are no winners and losers at our local showcase:  EVERYONE IS A WINNER!

Some films are singled out by the jury for special achievement, but everyone who takes part in the the Showcase is a winner.  You have your film screened on the big screen before an audience at the historic Tivoli theater,  You get to see what dozens of other local filmmakers, actors, and other local film pros are doing, whether it's documentaries, shorts, or features.  You get a chance to meet, mingle, and network with some of the best and brightest of our local film scene.

On a hot, muggy Thursday night in mid-July, the free Stella Artois beer flowed freely at the traditional closing-night party in Blueberry Hill's famed Duck Room.  Film professionals and film lovers crammed into the basement party room to hear the names of the 19 award-winners and get a first-hand glimpse at the local line-up for this November's St. Louis International Film Festival.

The jury this year had five members.  It was headed by Andrew Wyatt, film critic for St. Louis Magazine's "Look/Listen Blog" and the Gateway Cinephile Web site; the other jury members were Mark Glass, film critic for St. Louis area Patch.com web sites; Michelle McCue, film critic for the We Are Movie Geeks web site; Bill Streeter, director of the documentary Brick by Chance and Fortune and creator of the vlog LoFi St. Louis; and Wyatt Weed, director of the narrative feature Shadowland

Below are the line-ups for both the award-winners and the films invited to screen at the St. Louis International Film Festival.  We at MCA-I heartily congratulate all of the winners, but a special shout-out to one of our own:  MCA-I board member Denise Ward-Brown, whose film, Jim Crow to Barack Obama, won in the category, "Best Film More Than 20 Minutes."  Congratulations to Denise, and congratulations not only to those below, but to everyone who took part in the 2013 St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase -- a great testimony to the professionalism and creativity that exist in our local film community.
