Gretchen, December 2015: from homeless and unclaimed...
|
Society, we're all about new beginnings. Last year with the support of our community, we adopted 2,147 animals into their forever homes! This is an increase of over 7% from our previous year, and a number we've seen steadily growing over the years.
We believe that every at-risk animal deserves a chance to be happy and loved - and we're already off to a flying start with 54 animals finding forever homes so far this year. Each animal has a story to tell, including Gretchen, our first adoption of 2016!
When the Mini Poodle/Shih-Tzu mix arrived at Sonoma Humane Society as a stray last month, we just couldn't believe someone would let this little sweetie out of their sight. Calls and a letter to the party associated with her microchip yielded hang-ups and no response. We knew that the timid 8-year-old deserved to be in a home where she was cared for and looked after.

...to going home in loving arms as our first adoption of 2016!
|
Very shortly after she was available for adoption, she was scooped up by a lovely woman and her father. The duo's family history is rich with compassion toward animals. During the Great Depression, the man's parents operated a shelter for homeless dogs. They would drive from San Pablo to Oakland to collect day-old bread to make soup to feed the dogs - one of the few ways they could provide sustenance for them during those hard times.
Thanks to your support, we were able to provide protection, compassion, love and care until we could adopt Gretchen into such a wonderful home. And together we'll celebrate many more new beginnings this year - one animal at a time!

Peace of mind comes from being prepared. Take a moment to review your family's emergency plan and make sure it includes provisions for your pets.
