A Safe Haven for Animals
September 2015

Happy Tails Cody!
An animal leaving the shelter to go home:
always a heartwarming sight!

There was cake! There were bittersweet tears! But most of all there was widespread joy in watching Cody go home last month! All of us at SHS had formed strong bonds with the gentle giant during his time here and were elated to see him leave the building in the hands of loving, well-matched adopters.

The seven-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback/Shepherd mix came to us when his owner became ill and could no longer take care of him. It couldn't have been easy to surrender such a beloved and loyal dog. As we quickly learned, Cody was well-versed in the art of sit, stay and fetch, and would soak up all the attention we could give him. He truly craves human companionship... the company of other pets though, not so much. This, coupled with the fact that older dogs typically take longer to be adopted, meant that Cody waited a whole year and a half to find his forever home. Our hopes were raised last September when a nice family brought Cody home, but it soon became clear that he was not a good fit around younger children and he was returned to us.
And Cody makes three!

For some animals, it takes a little longer for the ideal home to manifest itself, but we are here for them however long it takes! When a wonderful couple came in last month looking to fill the void in their hearts left by their older dog's passing, they saw Cody and knew it was meant to be. Now this handsome dog is getting all the love and companionship he deserves, and as an added bonus, his new home includes plenty of room for him to explore and stretch his legs. We couldn't be happier for Cody and his new family!

Now that Cody has found a home, it's time for some other long-termers to find theirs. Please help us spread the word about Catalina and Cranberry!

Catalina came to us as a stray last November. As an energetic 4-year-old, she thrives on plenty of exercise and enjoys agility training with her shelter advocates. She is sensitive around other dogs and needs to be the only pet in the home. Like Cody, Catalina was adopted and returned when it didn't work out for the family. From this experience we learned that Catalina becomes anxious when left alone for long periods of time. This gorgeous American Pit Bull would make a fun companion for someone who works from home and can make sure she gets lots of exercise to keep her relaxed and happy. Catalina may be able to live in a home with kids age 10+.

Cranberry
has been with us since December of 2013. She has had "foster vacations" with SHS volunteers and staff members, and currently resides in our staff accountant's office! As a 14 year old kitty, Cranberry's arthritis is managed with daily medication which can be provided at no charge to her adopter. She enjoys being pet, but like many cats she likes her boundaries respected. Given her condition she's not a candidate for a home with small kids, but with her sweet calico presence and happy purr she will be a cozy addition to a mellow, mature family.

If you would like more information about Catalina or Cranberry, please call our Adoption Center at 707-542-0882.

2015 Gala Highlights!

Gala guest of honor Loretta,
an Angel's Fund recipient.
It was a beautiful evening at Trentadue Winery-champagne was poppin', agility dogs were hoppin', cats and bunnies were being snuggled. There was a wonderful vibe of joining together in the name of compassion! We are happy to report that our 2015 Wags, Whiskers and Wine Gala was a big success, raising almost $200,000 for the animals!

The Fund-A-Need portion of the auction alone raised over $65,000 for our Angel's Fund-an all-time record! This funding enables our shelter hospital to provide the life-saving medical care that animals require upon arrival at SHS. Need a "Reason to Believe"? Watch the video here

Ron C.'s new ride!
Good Karmann Ghia raffle: 300 tickets were purchased! Our lucky winner is Ron C. of Santa Rosa. He will be getting his Karmann Ghia in a couple of weeks and looks forward to taking it for a spin. Ron not only purchased a ticket, he also helped us sell tickets and promote the raffle. He was surprised to get the call letting him know he won! No surprise-Ron has GOOD KARMA!

We are honored by and grateful for everyone who attended this year's event. A big thank you to our Gala Committee led by Shannon Tracey, VP of our Board of Directors, our event sponsors, staff, and amazing volunteers who made it happen!
