A Safe Haven for Animals

Julia: a soulful survivor ready to begin a new life!

Beautiful + Remarkable = Julia

When you first meet Julia you see a friendly German Shepherd mix dog. Her warm brown eyes radiate love and her relaxed, wiggly body tells you she's happy and curious about new friends. This hasn't always been the case for this amazing 4-year-old though. When she first came to us, she had multiple bite wounds on her face, chest and legs, plus scars all over her body, as though she had been repeatedly attacked by other dogs. She was very thin, weak and limping. We quickly learned that she was unable to open her jaw. It wrenched our hearts to think that this sweet dog was not able to defend herself. Her history was unknown, but our veterinarian, Dr. Camblor, speculated that Julia suffered some kind of trauma when she was younger that had healed and fused her jaw closed. This beautiful survivor had adapted to her condition remarkably well, lapping food up with her tongue to bring it into her mouth, but her tongue protrudes out of her mouth the rest of the time.

Our medical team cleaned and dressed Julia's wounds and treated her for infections and shock. She was quite anxious during the first days of her recovery but responded very well to gentle TLC. It didn't take long for her to put her trust in our team and begin healing. Dr. Camblor consulted with other veterinary surgeons to learn what specialized procedures were available to help Julia's jaw condition. It was determined that any surgery would be extremely risky with little chance of any improvement. Since she is currently enjoying a much better quality of life, we believe that Julia will be able to live  healthfully and comfortably with caring guardians.

We see a wonderful new beginning on the horizon for this special dog!
Despite whatever she survived in the past,

Julia has emerged with an engaged, easy-going personality. She is now ready to soak up love and affection in her forever home. Given the special needs this wonderful dog has, her ideal family should have prior dog experience and no children under 6 years of age. She will most likely get along well with other dogs and cats. Some thought will need to be given to her physical limitations around eating. Julia eats canned food or softened kibble and it tends to get messy! A non-skid bowl and an easily washable dining area (or eating outside) will accommodate this situation. We think this minor workaround is a very small inconvenience considering how wonderful it will be to have this dog in your family. Because of Julia's condition and the care it will entail, the Sonoma Humane Society is prepared to offer her adopter lifelong medical care free of charge.

The charming Ms. Lucy!
Just when you thought Healdsburg couldn't get any more charming... the city gets an adorable new resident - Lucy! This 10-year-old love bug with the polka dot coat found her furever home last month!

Dove - spoiled much?

Dove was adopted by this lovely woman after making an appearance at The Healdsburg Dog House. From the looks of things, Dove's going to have a pretty wonderful life!

We are excited to be expanding animal care services for this beautiful part of our community. For more information about what we offer at the Healdsburg Center and for ways to get involved, please visit sonomahumane.org/hbg.
