Soft to Touch.  Hard to Catch.

This time of year, it's not uncommon for people to find stray kittens that appear to be lost or abandoned.

Just arrived at SHS this morning. Photo by: Sumner Fowler

If you find a kitten or litter of kittens alone, in most cases the mother cat is off hunting for food and will return shortly or she may be hiding from you. It's important not to take kittens who have a mother, as their best chance of survival is to remain with her. If you're concerned, check back an hour later or hide out of sight and watch the kittens from a distance to see if mama kitty comes back. If she does, it's important not to scoop up the kittens just yet.

When they're "of age," the kittens' best chance of survival will be to become socialized (human-friendly), then sterilized and adopted. It's all in the timing! Look for these three signs: open eyes, erect ears, and teeth showing-these are indicators that the kittens are at least three weeks of age and ready to be introduced to humans.  If mom is feral, you can attempt a humane trap for her and the kittens. Once they are safely trapped, it's important to bring the whole family to a rescue organization for spay/neuter and adoption services. If mom is a friendly community cat, you can provide food and start handling the kittens after about a week or so before placing them into a safe carrier and transporting them to rescue.

For the kitten litters who arrive at the Sonoma Humane Society now and throughout the summer ... help us be prepared.

Foster Volunteers make all the difference. Interested in sharing your love for six to eight weeks?  We'll show you how.

Last chance to help us reach our $50,000 Spay Neuter Challenge!

Every year, our Spay & Neuter program helps prevent thousands of unwanted animals from becoming homeless.

And right now your donation can help twice as many animals!

Thanks to our benefactors, a Matching Grant Challenge has been established to match your gift, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000!

That means whatever you send today will double in value. But only until May 15, 2013.

So far our generous donors have responded and matched $30,000 - can you help us reach our $50,000 goal?

Funding for the Spay & Neuter Challenge Match generously provided by the Salatko Animal Welfare Fund of Community Foundation Sonoma County.

" I didn't think our car was worth anything! I called the Sonoma Humane Society's Car Donation Program and could not be happier. It was super easy and I'm astonished to learn that over $3,000 was raised by my donation."
