Paws for miracles and other daily acts of kindness.                  Mid December  2012

Greetings!

It used to be that the family dog spent the holidays at the back door, hoping to be thrown a bone.

Today, more and more families are enjoying the holidays with their animals sharing in daily events. In my family for instance, we always make sure the dogs, kitties, fish and birds get holiday presents too! Whatever your holiday celebrations may be, our animals are becoming more and more valued members of our households, participating in our lives more than ever.

Traveling with your companion animals has become much easier too-what's important is keeping them safe when visiting unfamiliar places.  Click here to read our 7 Holiday Travel Tips for Your Animal.

Happy holidays, drive safe and take time to smell the cocoa!

Sincerely,

Crystal: A Destiny of Re-Connection

Crystal

Sometimes animals connect us with others in unimaginable ways.  Crystal is a feline with a gift for patience in pursuit of a greater goal: a forever home. Or at least...the loudest purr-meow ever.

3-year old Crystal arrived here on 11-11-11; a date with meaning on a larger scale as it only occurs once every 400 years. Reduce 400 by one zero and we have a different--yet entirely interconnected--story of companionship.

40 years ago two teachers, Ruth and Sue, became good friends-sharing inspiration, curriculum plans and ideas for getting through even the toughest of days. That friendship bloomed into summers of fun-filled European travels, burgeoning fond memories. Over time, Ruth eventually retired and the two lost touch. Ruth became a volunteer at the Sonoma Humane Society a few years ago-and had her eye on Crystal the day she came in.

Ruth and Crystal together forever.

Ruth decided that if Crystal was still here after a year, this

loveable cat was meant to be hers.  Then one day, Sue became a new volunteer here--and the two reunited! Hugs, stories and many shared lunches later, Ruth and Sue became inspired by the idea that if the day should come, each would adopt a special kitty.

As time went by, Crystal and Ruth also formed a special bond.  Crystal's playful spirit, huge lovely eyes and sweet demeanor made her the darling of many cat cuddlers here, but somehow, she was passed by for adoption, season after season. Over time, Crystal's lively yet enduring patience inspired and warmed many hearts.

The night before  11-11-12, Ruth and Sue both prepared their homes for their new forever companions. Crystal and CeCe--the kitty that held a special place in Sue's heart--must have both known that this was their lucky day. The next morning, their vocal anticipation was loud and clear--peals of purr-meows permeated the halls with cheers for a double homecoming!  Congratulations to two wonderful volunteers!

Foster to Adopt

Big Soul, Small Body (but not for long!)

Mufasa

Named after the Lion King, I know deep down I'm mighty and brave. With a zest for life, ample curiosity and a pound of cuteness thrown in (well maybe two pounds)--I plan on growing up to become a big guy. Only thing is, I need your help.

Dr. Camblor and her team have diagnosed me with megaesophagus, a condition where my esophagus--the tube that carries food and water down to my stomach--is not as strong as it could be, so food doesn't 'go down the pipe' too well.

To eat my two daily meals, I need to sit upright and stay that way for about ten minutes afterwards. The cause is unknown and definitely isn't contagious. I'll probably be visiting the vets here more often than your average cat, but that's the hand I've been dealt and like the Lion King, I' m patient and unafraid.

Yes, I'm up for the challenge. I've been training for weeks to eat sitting upright--and it's going great. I even have a lovely papoose I sit in during meals so everything goes into my tummy like it should. I'm growing bigger every day and dream of sharing my love and energy with a forever family. Who knows what kind of inspiration a cute little guy like me might be to your circle of friends and family?

Arthur

Arthur- 3.5 years young

Companionship is my thing, no matter your lifestyle! I'm happiest when sharing a strong bond with my humans and love being part of a household. Fluffy and playful, I get along easily with people, those of my own species and critters smaller than me, but doggies? They send a shiver down my spine! Sharing affectionate attention with you ranks equally with my desire for calm solitude.

Watching TV? I'll sit close by. Reading or napping? I'll join you-maybe even take in a few zzz's myself. Having a meal? I'll hang out quietly, savoring the aromas wafting under my nose... hoping for a possible morsel tossed in my dish. I'm your all-around pal-ready to curl up by your side or give you space, no matter your mood or the season. Come by and check me out!

Holly the Helper - 5.5 years young

Holly
Although I've been around for a few years, I'm young at heart! My motto? Helping others is the best way to stay happy. Friendly, curious and rather enchanting, you'll love my soft tortoiseshell coat and want to talk with me right away. I have a way of getting people to open up, and I'm a darned good listener.   Attentive and purr-full, I'll be your constant companion, padding quietly through the house with you, taking inventory of every detail as we go. Heck, you might even find me playing with an old cheese doodle just to amuse myself. Keep smiling, because who knows? I may even bring you that missing pen someday!

Momo - 5.5 years young

Momo

Are you a first-time cat owner? I'm your guy. A classic domestic shorthair with a solid unflappable presence and a fondness for naps, almost nothing bugs me and I'm super easy to get along with. Let's not stop there-my coat is soft and thick, welcoming your kind touch. My breed is also highly intelligent, which gives me a definite advantage over that sparkly puff toy or feather-on-a-stick you may have laying around. Sure, I'll play with those for a while, but I enjoy your company most of all. After a long day, I'm happy to walk on your back to relieve your stress. What I'd really like to know is, will you be my new human? And where's the rest of the bird that came with that stick?

Kigali

Kigali - 4.5 years young

Petite, curious, affectionate and exotic...who could ask for a more scrumptious kitty? I'll head butt you for warmth and closeness just about every time our eyes meet, and I'll be apt to rub my long striped fur across your legs and lap when its cuddle time.   And if you ever ask me to do something silly, I'll astonish you with my super cute 'wha' meow that lets you know how surprised I am that you asked! When we're apart, I'll be sleuthing about to make sure our home is safe-or half-napping with an eye out for anything that moves. Did I mention anytime is cuddle time?

The Sonoma Humane Society Veterinary Hospital

It's the heart of our work in the world.

This innovative hospital delivers all types of surgical procedures-including dental hygiene, radiology and diagnostic testing in addition to regular exams and health check-ups-- and we are open to the public! Whether your animals have been adopted here or not, our doors are open to care for your pet.

Word is getting out, so make an appointment today. Your family's well-being is our top priority.

SpayPAL: Low Cost Cat Spay/Neuter program for Sonoma County residents.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Salatko Animal Welfare Fund of Community Foundation Sonoma County, we are now able to offer low cost services. All cat spay/neuter surgeries are just $30 and include a free rabies vaccine. Surgeries are offered by appointment at the Sonoma Humane Society's Spay/Neuter Clinic.

Please remember, spaying or neutering your cat has many benefits including reduction of unwanted births and the influence of hormones on your pet's behavior. Unspayed and unneutered cats are responsible for hundreds of unwanted and abandoned kittens every year. Some of these animals find homes but many more end up in shelters, or on the street, where they face a very uncertain future. By spaying or neutering your cat, you do your part to prevent feline over-population and suffering.

Please call (800) 427-7973 to schedule your appointment and help us spread the word!

TravelingSafetyTips
7 Holiday Travel Tips for Your Animal
  • Create a 'Safety Circle.' Ensure your animal is micro-chipped, has a current ID tag, AND has a temporary travel tag with your and you partner's cell phone numbers on it.
  • Adding the name and number of a local area vet is another good way to reinforce your pet's circle of safety.
  • Use a well-ventilated crate or carrier with a supply of towels for comfort-and potential accidents.
  • Stay alert at rest stops. Leash your animal and give him/her time to sniff around. Other animals are out exploring the same new territories and can be unpredictable.
  • Traveling cross-state? Having your animal's rabies and vaccination record in your glove compartment can bring peace of mind.
  • Pack the basics: Refillable eco-friendly water bottles, snacks for all species, paper or cloth towels and a favorite toy or two.
  • And pack an emergency kit: include tweezers, alcohol swabs, hydrogen peroxide, gauze and gauze tape. Band aids for human travelers will come in handy too.
