May 2014

Scores of runners and walkers gathered anxiously to await the sound of the whistle which would announce the start of the 'One Lap' race on Wednesday April 09th, 2014 at the Queens Park Savannah. Members from numerous financial institutions were in attendance to compete against their counterparts.

Before the race, the competitors were treated to an aerobics warm-up session sponsored by the Guardian Group.  There was uniformity

as the crowd moved in time to the instructor's moves as he took them through the routine step by step paces.

One could feel the tension in the air as persons from the Guardian Group, Sagicor, IBL Bank, Scotia Bank, Republic Bank, CITI Bank, First Citizens Bank, Unit Trust and Royal Bank gathered at the start line preparing for take off. The intense look on each person's face

confirmed their intensity to win.  The race started off with the runners setting off first; followed by the walkers who took off five minutes later.
With bated breath, spectators and supporters waited to see who would have been the first person to cross the finish line. Approximately fifteen minutes later, the announcement coming from PA system indicated that the first set of runners were approaching.

Two figures could be seen; one leading, the other chasing. One could see it was going to be close with 20 meters to go and Jedidiah Benjamin of RBC gaining on Rashad Blenman of Guardian Group. With the final 10 - 8 meters, first timer Benjamin was just able to edge past Blenman to take the One Lap honours. Benjamin nabbed him in 15.07.03 and Blenman settled for 2nd in 15.07.06. "

"We are glad to see RBC is still competitive and we are able to win even if Simon Kalestein (2013 winner) wasn't able to be there to defend his title. We were glad that Jedidiah Benjamin was able to step up to the plate and we look forward to the next three running events as they are going to be very exciting," said Richard Downie Head, RBC Service Delivery South.

Among the females, things were less dramatic as CITI's Lee Hay sealed the deal with a timing of 17.20.6, to give CITI their first taste of overall vi
ctory in a CariFin athletic event . Lee Hay, the former Most Improved winner and team captain said, "I am self motivated, I have been training seriously since January for this."

Susan Russel of RBC took 2nd place in 19.05.6 and Simone Balkissoon of Sagicor crossed the line for 3rd spot in a time of 19.14.0.

In the walk Deodath Harrikissoon of First Citizens who is approaching legendary status in CariFin Games whipped his competitors to finish at 24.16. "This year I expected more competition but it felt good to wins it three years in row."

Clem Jubrajsingh followed in at 24.19.3 and Terrance Worrel at 26.31.0.

Among the female participants, Aliya Marisa Henry of Republic Bank established her superiority on the field by finishing in 25.46.1 in the walking race. "It is unexpected, but winning is always nice," she said. Kendra Richins and Tiffany Williams of First Citizens took 2nd place and 3rd respectively, finishing in 26:33.9 and 28:07.4.

In the end they all had fun. "They were all excited and happy and waiting and eager to come out to the Green Mile," said Jagdath Soomarie team captain of IBL Bank.

The organizing committee would like to thank Blue Waters for being "The Official Water" provider for CariFin Games 2014. We  thank them for their generous support.
