Welcome to CariFin Games first newsletter for 2014

It's that time again...CariFin time! We would like to welcome everyone to CariFin Games 2014....and once again, it's all about YOU. This year, we celebrate the 23rd edition of CariFin Games, where it's still all about health, fitness and who's the best.

True to our vision, CariFin Games 2014 will see some new additions this year, as we continue to improve the Games to ensure you get the most out of it. We are poised for another good year of action, fun and excitement, living true to our established mantra of Fun, fitness and friendship.

Unit Trust Corporation is on board this year so we expect the competition to be more intense. One year later, the 2013 winners have most likely improved their game and the challengers are gunning after them to take their positions.

A new event is carded for this year's games and the teams are quite curious to know what it is about. We are talking about CariFin CrossFit Challenge!  We can tell you, there are some eager and enthusiastic participants just waiting for the competition to start, to get their names in the winning positions to start the bragging.

In the countdown to the start of the Games, we also plan to keep you in the loop via our newsletter. Here in this first issue for 2014, we will tell you all about CariFin's contribution to the Lupus Society of Trinidad and Tobago, why you should try the CariFin CrossFit Challenge, the story of a great CariFin athlete and much more. In this issue, we are also inviting volunteers to assist in making CariFin Games 2014 a success...so if you have always wanted to be part of CariFin, here's your chance! And last but certainly not least, check our "What's On Schedule" for the list of upcoming CariFin events 2014.

CariFin People Help Make a Difference

Christine Dalkan

Since its start in 1991, CariFin Games has recognized the dedication of those pushing forward in raising awareness of diseases and helping persons living with diseases.

In this vein, Patricia Wiltshire of First Citizens suggested the Lupus Society as the cause to put CariFin's support behind. She felt that Lupus was not highlighted as other diseases such as cancer were by the wider public and corporate sponsors.

Recognizing the effort being made by the Lupus Society of Trinidad and Tobago to improve the quality of life for people living with Lupus, CariFin put its full support behind this endeavour. Annually, each time a person registers for the CariFin Urban Challenge, five dollars of the registration fee is donated to the Lupus Society. In this way, CariFin Games' participants are always encouraged to 'run for a reason'.

Continuing this tradition, last year CariFin donated a cheque of $10,400 to this foundation. Janeal James, Ms. CariFin 2013 got the opportunity to be part of the kind gesture, when she handed over the cheque to the President of the Lupus Society, Curtis Wilson, on behalf of CariFin.

This contribution took place in the foyer of CCN TV6 on Independence Square, Port-of-Spain. Present for the handing over were the current Ms. CariFin Janeal James, Guardian Group Team Leader Kavita Siewah, President of the Lupus Society Mr. Curtis Wilson, Chairman of CariFin Wayne Roberts and photographer, Karla Ramoo.

The CariFin Legends Series

For the past twenty-three years, CariFin Games has served as a playground and platform for incredible athleticism, camaraderie and celebration. The Games has allowed many athletes to express their talents in various forms; it has given them an opportunity to grow and develop within the world of sports and be recognized for their efforts. CariFin Games has also provided an outlet for these athletes to be heard

CariFin Games wishes to recognize and remember these individuals and their notable feats as they were discovered, nurtured and allowed to blossom as everyone observed with smiles, applause and pride.

Rasheeda Ann Moncada

To kick off this series of recognition, it is with pleasure that we commence with non-other than, Rasheeda Ann Moncada (formerly Mohammed) an athlete who ruled her era fearlessly

Rasheeda Ann Moncada remains the only participant in the history of the event to capture three consecutive Carifin Cross Country Run titles and four consecutive Carifin Cross Country RaceWalk titles. These two major races are held within fifteen minutes of each other testing the mettle of many eager athletes who attempt to attain this prestigious double victory each year. Ms. Moncada secured her double victories for three years in a row which, thus far, has remained an unmatched double hat-trick. A unique accomplishment that emphasizes the versatility and brawn of this athlete.

Ms. Moncada also dominated the CariFin Urban Challenge then known as the 4-Part Fitness Challenge when it debuted in 2001. She displayed her range of skill and fitness by winning all four legs of the event; the Botanic Gardens Mini Cross Country, the Queens Park Savannah One-Lap (2.2 Miles in an impressive 14:02 minutes), the 400m sprint and the Aerobics Marathon. A feat she repeated in 2002. In this year she took her eventual departure from our financial services sector.

"Be sure to join CariFin Games in its 2014 Edition and Mission to explore and express the best you!"
