Julie King to Depart as Director of Technology

Julie King has been named the Director of the Hedges Library at Baylor School in Chattanooga, effective July 1. She began as Library Director at ESK in 2006 and was named Director of Technology in 2009. During her time here, Julie was instrumental in beginning both the Lower School iPad program and the Middle School Flex 1:1 Technology Program. She has been at the forefront of the implementation of robotics, 3D printing, maker clubs, and effective integration between technology and course curriculum. Julie has also been a host and presenter at the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS) Technology Forum, the Tennessee Educational Technology Conference, and the TAIS Biennial Conference. ESK has kept itself ahead of the curve in educational technology during Julie's tenure. We wish Julie great success at Baylor!

 

Joe Fowler, a graduate of Western Carolina University School of Music, has accepted the position of Director of Technology for the 2015-16 year. He currently directs all technology operations and teaches music at Summit Charter School where he works closely with our new Headmaster, Jack Talmadge. During his 13 years of service to Summit, Joe managed the design and installation of information technology resources for the school's new campus, deployed a school-wide iPad program, and installed interactive whiteboards in every classroom. Additionally, Joe expanded the music program with the purchase and implementation of a Yamaha Music in Education system. Joe devotes his spare time to tinkering with his son, Simon, in electronics and model aviation as well as keeping an active performance schedule with local ensembles. Joe is excited to bring his family to Knoxville and become a part of the ESK family. Simon will be a JK4 student next school year.

 

Cicely Upham Named Assistant Director of Development

Beginning July 1, current Development Associate Cicely Upham will take on the role of Assistant Director of Development. In this position, she will continue to manage alumni relations and support day-to-day development work, but she will also be adding the Gala to her list of duties. She is excited to venture into this new territory and welcomes any advice or support from parents and staff!

Chess Team Place In Top 10 at State Finals

The ESK Primary and Elementary Chess Teams competed in the Tennessee State Finals at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville last weekend, after qualifying for the State Finals in the Regional Competition. The Primary Team finished in 7th place in the Primary School Division, and the Elementary Team finished in 6th place in the Elementary Team Division. First Grader Jack Quigley won each of the four matches he played to lead the Primary team. Primary team members include Jack Quigley, Anthony Schmitt, Charlie Cowart and Max Mealor. Elementary team members are Jose Vowell, Phil Spates, Austin Rhea, Tono Vowell, Eliot Jolley. Great job!

 

Covenant Kids Run

Nearly 40 ESK Lower School students, parents and faculty competed over the weekend in the Covenant Health Kids Run "Marathon" as part of the Knoxville Marathon weekend. Kids logged their miles over the last two months to total 26.2 miles, the length of a marathon. On Saturday, they had the opportunity to run the last mile of the "marathon" and cross the finish line on the 50-yard line at Neyland Stadium. Mrs. Evans is so proud of all those who completed this challenge - great job!

 

Maundy Thursday Eucharist

On Thursday, ESK students, faculty and staff participated in Chapel and Holy Eucharist in honor of Maundy Thursday. The service focused on the teachings of Holy Week in preparation for Easter. Thanks to those teachers and staff who assisted with Eucharist.

"Annie"

The ESK Middle School Chorus will present "Annie" on Friday, April 10, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Please join us for this wonderful production in the Kline Gymnasium. Admission is free, but donations to Hams for the Hungry are welcome!

 

Talent Show Coming!

Save the date for the ESK Lower School Talent Show scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. in the Kline Gymnasium. There is a mandatory rehearsal on Monday, April 20, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Keep an eye on Headlines for additional information as the date draws near.

 

Graduation Planning

It is an ESK tradition that current 7th Grade parents host a reception honoring the graduating class immediately following graduation. Planning has begun and excitement is in the air! If you have a particular skill you can offer and are excited to help us accomplish this event, PLEASE contact either Erika Letsinger (Letsinger@esknoxville.org) or Melissa Kirk (Kirk@esknoxville.org).

 

Doing Some Spring Cleaning?

Mrs. Evans is collecting popular board games (Candy Land, Twister, Kerplunk, Checkers, Jenga, Scrabble, Sorry, etc) for field day props. They do not have to be complete games. Please drop off in the gym or find Mrs. Evans in the carpool line.

 

Tennis Party

The Cedar Bluff Racquet Club and their Junior Tennis Program invite all students to a free tennis party! The event takes place on Saturday, April 18 from noon-1:30 p.m. at Cedar Bluff Racquet club. Those in attendance will enjoy fun and tennis fundamentals. There will be tennis instruction in a fun, safe and positive environment. Either bring a racket or CBRC will provide one. CTP Achievement Testing

Please make note of achievement testing coming in April. All students in grades 4-8 will take the assessment online this year. Grades 4 and 5 will test April 14-16 using the school's iPads and devices, and Grades 6-8 will test the following week, April 20-23, using the student's own device. For any questions about assessments, please contact your child's teacher or Lois Ross, Director of Testing. You may also learn more about the assessments from the website,www.erblearn.org.

 

Summer Math Class

This summer, Mrs. Barb Quaint will be offering a weekly math class to help keep students' minds sharp. Students will complete the summer math requirement, as well as preview next year's textbook. Class will meet in room 111 in the middle school on Tuesdays. The cost for this class is $200 (payable to Mrs. Quaint by the first day of class) for Tuesday, June 2 through Tuesday, July 28*. Please contact Mrs. Quaint (quaint@esknoxville.org) if you would like your child to participate. *There will be no class Tuesday July 7.

Design Competition

ESK alum Trey King was recently named one of four winners of a College of Architecture and Design Freshman Design Competition. Nearly 190 freshmen were entered into the competition. Congratulations Trey!

 

Save the Date! Alumni Gathering

The Alumni Relations office invites all alums to the Annual Alumni Summer Gathering. Save the date for May 27 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on the ESK Campus. Come catch up with old teachers and friends and enjoy some delicious dinner. What better way to kick of the summer than reconnect with your ESK family! Grace Point

Summer is the time to explore, learn and grow. Grace Point summer camp offers an exciting camping experience on 275 wooded acres surrounded by more than a mile of lakefront. Our well-rounded program encourages campers to build friendships, explore their individual spirituality and develop an appreciation for nature. Our action packed days help campers to develop their independence and self-confidence while having fun.

 

Camp dates and prices have now been posted on their website gracepointcamp.org.
