MLK Jr. Day Parade

A record turnout of students, parents, faculty, staff and ESK supporters came out to march in the 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in East Knoxville sponsored by the Knoxville Martin Luther King Commission. The morning began with breakfast at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, prepared by St. John's men's service group, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. The group then took its place in line and marched the two-mile route along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, passing out candy and waving to those who attended the parade. The students returned to St. Luke's following the parade before heading to lunch at Mellow Mushroom on Cumberland Avenue. This year, parade participants were riding in style as the Big Love Bus provided transportation for this year's event.

Thanks to all those who attended this year's event and made it such a success! A special thanks to Father Josh Hill for organizing and coordinating the day!

2015 YWCA Race Against Racism

Congratulations to the ESK students, faculty and family members who turned out for the 2015 YWCA Race Against Racism on Saturday afternoon. The event featured a 5K run and a 1-mile walk with proceeds benefiting YWCA programs, including free youth and senior programming in East Tennessee. ESK was honored as the "Fastest Team" and Middle School students Carson Davis and Riley Schumaker each won their age division. Great job!

Family Fun Night

Join ESK Athletics, the Parents Association and the Student Government Association for a great family night of basketball, dance teams, pizza and party! All three of our middle school basketball teams will be playing (4:30, 5:30 and 6:30). The LS and MS Dance Teams will perform between games, and Bernie the Mascot will make a special appearance. Warm up your ball handling skills for a halftime shooting contest; and be ready to sign up for the pizza walk!

Re-Enrollment Information Available Soon

Re-enrollment information for 2015-2016 school year will be sent electronically the end of January. The deadline for Financial Aid applications is January 30, 2015. While you will be asked to upload or send your 2014-15 tax return directly to School and Student Services, financial aid decisions can be made prior to receiving your completed return. Once it is received, the tax return information will be used to verify income, and awards may be adjusted accordingly. In order to determine financial aid awards prior to the re-enrollment contract deadline of February 23, 2014, it is imperative that we receive completed Parent Financial Statements in a timely manner. Please be in touch with Susan Denton (865-218-4488) if you have any questions.

Holiday Bureau Collection Continues

It's time to clean out closets and find new homes for all those old toys, children's clothing, bikes, tricycles, scooters, books, TVs, computers, and other items. The first grade classes at the Episcopal School have been collecting donations for their service project, the Holiday Bureau, and we are hoping to fill TWO U-Haul trucks. This Monday, January 26 is the final day to bring donations.

What is the Holiday Bureau? It is an all-volunteer organization in Oak Ridge that collects old toys and other items and cleans them up to distribute to needy families in Anderson and Roane Counties the following December.

What can I donate? The Holiday Bureau accepts a wide variety of used items including toys, board games, puzzles, dolls, stuffed animals, books, play furniture, bikes, tricycles, scooters, skateboards, TVs, computers, radios, CD players, and children's clothing.

When can I donate? We will be collecting donations from Monday, January 12 through Monday, January 26. Please drop your donations off in the Siler Hallway in the lower school.

Over the last 14 years, The Episcopal School has become a huge part of the Holiday Bureau's collections each year and we appreciate your support of such a worthy organization. Help us reach our goal of filling two trucks this year!

If you have any questions please email Chris Bishop at bishop@esknoxville.org or Anna Ottaviano at ottaviano@esknoxville.org.

3D Printing Fuels Learning

3D printing is full steam ahead! Thanks to a generous parent donation, ESK now has two 3D printers; Makerbot's Replicator 2 and a Replicator Mini. Just this week, Mrs. Parham's 3rd Grade students began learning how to design elements of simple machines using the free app 123D Design. They will work in teams to design shapes that work together to make functioning simple machines, then bring their designs to life with our Makerbot Replicator printers.

In Ms. Foss's 7th grade math class, students have begun learning about 3D design software, and will be using their own devices to create objects, measure and estimate scale and surface area. Also in Middle School, Mrs. Quaint's Advanced Math elective students are completing instructive tutorials for OpenScad. This design program allows for code-based, step-by-step design - more challenging than introductory drag-and-drop approaches. Each 8th graders in the elective will create a unique object with a specific function, and will 3D print their design when complete.
