January 15, 2015

The mission of The Episcopal School of Knoxville is to prepare students for higher education and a lifetime of learning within the context of a loving, inclusive and family-centered community. Knoxville Opera Presents Bizet's "Carmen"

The Knoxville Opera's production of Bizet's "Carmen" made a stop at ESK on Friday morning as part of their school outreach program. The Opera traveled to nearly 20 schools around the area and presented a shortened, 45-minute version of "Carmen." Sarasota Opera mezzosoprano Briana Hunter portrayed the captivating Spanish gypsy girl Carmen, UT School of Music alumnus Peter Johnson performed the role of the Toreador Escamillo, and Texas tenor Sergio Cepeda played Don Jose. Executive Director and Conductor Brian Salesky provided narration and music for the show.

The full production of Bizet's "Carmen" will be at the Tennessee Theater on Friday, February 13 and Sunday, February 15. For more information, please visit KnoxvilleOpera.com.

Eucharist Coming Friday

Just a reminder that ESK will be celebrating Holy Eucharist in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Friday, January 16, at 8:00 and 10:15 a.m. in St. Bartholomew's Chapel. Students should remember to wear their formal uniform. Family and friends are always welcome to attend.

MLK Day Holiday

There will be no school on Monday, Jan. 19, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

All Episcopal School of Knoxville students, faculty members and families are invited to march in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade for the twelfth year. The 2015 Parade route will stretch from the Tabernacle Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Avenue to Greater Warner A.M.E. Church in Burlington. Parents should plan to take their children to the parade route or arrange a carpool for them. The ESK marchers will be part of a larger delegation that typically includes members of Episcopal churches in the Diocese of East Tennessee, as well as the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. Our participation is an ongoing reflection of the church's historic involvement in issues concerning social justice.

ESK students will meet at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 600 S. Chestnut Street. The group will board a bus at 9:30 and travel to the parade step-off at 10 a.m. The parade route will be 2 miles, rain or shine. The bus will return to St. Luke's after the parade. At that point, please join ESK for lunch (self pay) at Mellow Mushroom on Cumberland Avenue.

Please note students will not be under school care for this day. Each student must be with a parent or designated adult chaperone. Contact Father Josh via email at hill@esknoxville.org, if you wish to attend.

Holiday Bureau Collection Continues

It's time to clean out closets and find new homes for all those old toys, children's clothing, bikes, tricycles, scooters, books, TVs, computers, and other items. On Monday, January 12, the first grade classes at the Episcopal School will begin collecting donations for their service project, the Holiday Bureau, and we are hoping to fill TWO U-Haul trucks.

What is the Holiday Bureau? It is an all-volunteer organization in Oak Ridge that collects old toys and other items and cleans them up to distribute to needy families in Anderson and Roane Counties the following December.

What can I donate? The Holiday Bureau accepts a wide variety of used items including toys, board games, puzzles, dolls, stuffed animals, books, play furniture, bikes, tricycles, scooters, skateboards, TVs, computers, radios, CD players, and children's clothing.

When can I donate? We will be collecting donations from Monday, January 12 through Monday, January 26. Please drop your donations off in the Siler Hallway in the lower school.

Over the last 14 years, The Episcopal School has become a huge part of the Holiday Bureau's collections each year and we appreciate your support of such a worthy organization. Help us reach our goal of filling two trucks this year!

If you have any questions please email Chris Bishop at bishop@esknoxville.org or Anna Ottaviano at ottaviano@esknoxville.org.
