The mission of The Episcopal School of Knoxville is to prepare students for higher education and a lifetime of learning within the context of a loving, inclusive and family-centered community. We enrich our students' intellectual, physical, cultural and spiritual growth so that they may realize their potential as children of God and citizens of the world.

It's hard to believe that this is the last week of September and that October begins on Wednesday. The school year has been full of great times already, and we are anxious to see what the future will bring!

LAMBS Pet Food Drive

ESK's Kindergarten students kicked off their annual service project Monday morning. They will be collecting dry dog and cat food for LAMBS (Lover of Animals Ministry and Bible Study). This pet food will be delivered to FISH Hospitality Pantry for distribution to those in need of food for their animals. The drive will end with the Blessing of the Animals on Friday, October 4. Please send dry dog or cat food to the Kindergarten classrooms or drop off locations in Googe Hall. Last year, ESK students contributed a TON of pet food to FISH!

Lower School students who bring a bag of dry dog AND cat food to school by Thursday, Oct. 2, will get FREE DRESS on Friday, Oct. 3. The Middle School Interact Club will be collecting food Wednesday, Oct. 1, and Middle School students who bring a bag of dry dog AND cat food that day, will receive a free dress coupon for a to-be-announced date.

Hunger Hike

In Knox County 57,000 people live in poverty -- more than 25% of them are children. Thousands of other families live near the poverty line and struggle for the basic necessities of life. 1 out of 5 children are at risk of going to bed hungry tonight. The number of families who come to food pantries in Knoxville has more than doubled in the last two years.

The Fish Hospitality Pantry is hosting its annual Hunger Hike on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at Lakeshore Park on Northshore Drive. It is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for Fish and enjoy a Sunday stroll around Lakeshore with ESK friends. The walkers solicit sponsors, and all proceeds benefit the ministry of the Fish Hospitality Pantry. Five dollars feeds a family of four for three days! Middle School students can get service hours for raising money and walking. Please encourage your child to participate!

Blessing of the Animals

All ESK students are invited to participate in the Blessing of the Animals on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 8:00 a.m., on the lawn in front of Googe Hall.  This yearly service in honor of St. Francis Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment, is a favorite ESK tradition.  Bring any pet for a blessing.  We do ask that you have your pet in a cage or on a leash, clean up any mess that might occur, and take them home soon after the blessing. Students have recess in the lawn used for this event so bags will be available to assist with cleanup.

Pep Rally

ESK students celebrated fall athletic teams with an all-school Purple and White Pep Rally Thursday afternoon in the Kline Gymnasium. The students wore purple and white clothing, and members of the fall sports teams were recognized. The students had a great time!

Middle School Basketball Coaches Announced

This year, Varsity Boys' Basketball will be lead by Greg Jones. Coach Jones has seven years experience coaching middle school boys basketball, eight years running a youth program and two years working in a traveling basketball skills training program. He has joined ESK this year as a new parent (Ella 6th, Cooper 8th) and as the JV girls volleyball coach.

Morgan Slatery will once again head up Girls' Varsity Basketball. Coach Slatery played middle school and high school ball, primarily as a shooting guard and point guard. She coached our girls last year, and we are thrilled to have her back. Mrs. Slatery is in her second year teaching at ESK, her first year in middle school science.

JV boys will be piloted by David Spates again this year. Coach Spates reports a lot of pick up basketball games in his youth. He has coached the Saints League for two seasons and the ESK JV boys for one season. He has also coached ESK flag football, ESK softball and numerous softball seasons with CBFO. When he's not shuttling from field to field during various sports seasons with his kids, he teaches math, writing and science to his fifth-graders at ESK, where is been a teacher for five years.

Finally, Margaret Googe will direct the JV Girls this season. Coach Googe is a 3rd Grade Assistant and this is her first time coaching basketball. Coach Googe played basketball from elementary through high school, including two years on the ESK Girls Varsity team! She also played high school volleyball and soccer.  Margaret is currently co-coaching the Lower School Cross Country Team.

The October meeting of the PA will be on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 2-3 p.m. in the Middle School Dining Hall. Please join us for an informative meeting!

Vienna Coffee Fundraiser

The ESK Parents' Association launched its annual fundraiser last week. This year, the PA is joining with Vienna Coffee to create a simple stream of monthly revenue for the ESK PA and, at the same time, show support of a local coffeehouse!

Here's how it works:

Eighty percent of the parents at ESK drink at least 1-2 cups of coffee each day. Why not have those coffee drinking habits help support our school and our students! Instead of buying coffee from the local grocery or Starbucks, you can now buy the highest quality coffee from www.viennacoffeeco.com and $3.00 from every bag of coffee purchased will be given back to the school. If you, your spouse, or your company, are coffee drinkers, this is a great opportunity to buy coffee AND SUPPORT ESK.

Go to www.viennacoffeeco.com and support ESK PA today! Click here for video with step-by-step directions for ordering. If you have any questions, please contact PA President Katherine Fielden at kikifielden@gmail.com.
