Eighth Grade

Eighth Graders at the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C.
ESK Eighth Graders are soaking up the sights in the nation's capital! The trip began Tuesday with a visit to Mt. Vernon Estate in Maryland. Wednesday was a jam-packed day that included tours of the International Spy Museum, the FDR and WWII Memorials and several museums at the Smithsonian. Other highlights for the remainder of the trip include a visit to the Holocaust Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, the National Archives, a tour of the Capitol and National Cathedral along with a Potomac cruise.

Seventh Grade

Seventh Graders are enjoying a fun-filled three days in Atlanta, Ga. They kicked off the trip with a visit to Turner Field for an afternoon baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins. Following the game, students visited the World of Coca-Cola, ate dinner at Hard Rock Café and got a 360-view of the city at the Sun Dial Observation Deck. Thursday featured trips to the Carter Center Library, the Fernbank Museum and a visit to the Alliance Theater for "Maurice Hines in Tappin' Thru Life". A visit to the MLK Center and St. Luke's Cathedral will wrap up the trip on Friday.

Sixth Grade

Sixth Grade girls at the Chattanooga Aquarium.
Sixth Grade students have had a wonderful time in Chattanooga! They started their trip with a visit to Red Clay, Cherokee Interpretive Center, and a stop at the Chattanooga Aquarium. Wednesday afternoon also included a Duck Boat Tour of the city. Thursday's schedule included a trip up the Incline Railway, the Hunter Museum and a Chattanooga Lookouts baseball game. The students will visit the UT Challenger Center and make a stop at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga before returning home Friday.

Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade students spent a couple of fun-filled days Tuesday and Wednesday exploring Tennessee's capital city, Nashville. The trip is a culmination of their yearlong study of the
Fourth Grade on the steps of the Tennessee Capitol Building.
history and story of the state of Tennessee. While on the trip, students had the opportunity to visit the Capitol, hear about the Civil War at the Tennessee State Museum and take in a show at the Grand Ole Opry. The trip also featured stops at the Parthenon, Hermitage and the Bicentennial Mall along with meals at The Rainforest Café and Cracker Barrel.

The Gala is Saturday!

The 10th Annual Saints' Gala is this Saturday, April 26! This is the school's largest fundraising event to raise money for the Annual Fund, which provides resources for the classrooms, technology, athletics, and fine arts. Cocktail hour, Silent Auction, and Children's Art start at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is at 8:00 p.m., with the Live Auction to follow. Make sure you check out the event website for full details regarding items in the Silent and Live Auction.

Talent Show Coming!

The ESK Lower School Talent Show is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Kline Gymnasium. All participants need to review the program for the event to make sure their listing is correct. Call Susan Darby in the Lower School office with any changes.

If you have any questions, please contact Lucy Tyler at tyler@esknoxville.org or Tina San Gil at two47@gmail.com.

Passover Seder

The Dining Hall served a delicious Passover Seder lunch on Tuesday. The menu included roasted chicken, hard-boiled eggs, matzah, roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables, horseradish (from the garden), horosat and parsley with salt water. Each of the foods is representative of the seder plate: the chicken is representative of the sacrifice on the eve of the exodus from Egypt, horseradish is for the bitterness of slavery and horosat is the mortar and brick the Jewish people made for the Pharoah. The vegetables are the backbreaking work; parsley and salt water are tears of the ancestors while the egg is the symbol of life.

8th Grade Portfolio Night

Please join students from the Eighth Grade on Monday, April 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. as they share their portfolio projects with the ESK community. For the yearlong project, each student selected a topic of personal interest. He or she then wrote an MLA-style research paper that includes an interview with an expert, envisioned and carried out a service project, and produced an artifact related to their chosen topic. This year's projects run the gamut from bacon to the history of Legos, and from the domestication of cats to how to write a successful novel

ERB Score Reports

Please join Lois Ross, Director of Testing, on Thursday, May 1 at 8:30 a.m. in the Middle School Media Center, for a brief presentation on how to read the ERB's CTP and WrAP score reports that you will receive later in the school year, after all testing is completed. The session will help you to understand scale scores, stanines, and percentiles, and how to use your child's previous years' scores for comparison.

In celebration of Earth Day, Brownie Girl Scout Troop 20450 hosted special guest Allison Teeters from Knoxville Keep America Beautiful. Ms. Teeters read the story of Evie the Golden Retriever, famous for retrieving litter of all types. She conducted a discussion of how the girls can "make Earth Day every day." She also shared stories of the most unusual types of litter found on clean ups. Troop 20450 will be adopting a greenway and conducting a clean up as a way of giving back to the community. They will be donning their Keep America Beautiful "Green Starts With Me" t-shirts that they received as they work to improve their environment.

Congratulations Celeste!

Congratulations to ESK Second Grader Celeste Urdal for receiving a Bronze Award from the Tennessee chapter of the International Reading Association last Thursday night. The local Smoky Mountain Reading Council submitted over 60 entries to the Celebrate Literacy Contest. Celeste independently wrote and illustrated her own book. It took several months for her to complete her book. Congratulations!
