April 17, 2014
The mission of The Episcopal School of Knoxville is to prepare students for higher education and a lifetime of learning within the context of a loving, inclusive and family-centered community. We enrich our students' intellectual, physical, cultural and spiritual growth so that they may realize their potential as children of God and citizens of the world.

Talent Show Update

Because of the overwhelming response, the Lower School Talent Show will begin earlier than previously announced. We will begin the show at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, in the Kline Gymnasium. The performers were all told at practice that their music would fade at the two-minute mark to assure that we are able to keep to the schedule and dismiss on time. If you have any questions, please contact Lucy Tyler at tyler@esknoxville.org or Tina San Gil at two47@gmail.com

Hams for the Hungry

The Fourth Grade classes raised money for Hams for the Hungry a couple weeks ago as part of their community service project. Students at ESK had several opportunities to donate to this great cause, including Free Dress Day, purchasing snacks at the bake sale and Jazzy Jars and finally Wacky Hat Wednesday. Each student could purchase a ticket to wear a hat to school Wednesday. Both Mrs. Bornemann and Mrs. Hoover's classes picked winners for Wacky Hat day. The winners were First Graders Andrew McLean and Jack Pearson and Middle School students Leoni Kunz and Tristan Stouffer. The Fourth Grade raised a total $1,754.12 for Hams for the Hungry and The Love Kitchen. Thank you to everyone who donated to this great cause!!

Safety Smarts

Several ESK Middle School students earned service hours this week by participating in a Safety Smarts series with the Lower School. Middle School students had the opportunity to volunteer to participate in Safety Smarts training and then turn around and share their knowledge with Lower School students. Grades Kindergarten through Fourth will spend time this week learning about how to be healthy and fit, including the importance of being germ-free. During the sessions, students watch clips of a short movie featuring Timon and Pumbaa from The Lion King as part of a Safety Smart series produced by Disney. Father Josh and Pansie Evans would like to thank ESK parent Marcie Hethmon for presenting this series to the school and for coordinating the volunteers and their training.

Blue and Green Day

Tuesday, April 22, will be Blue and Green Day in Honor of Earth Day. Students can wear blue and green attire if they pay $2.00. All proceeds go to Friends of The Smokies. This service project is headed up by Second Grade. They will be visiting Cades Cove and learning about the environment and life in the GSM National Park. Please come to the Second Grade School Store to purchase tickets.

Passover Seder

ESK will serve a seder lunch for all students Tuesday, April 22, in honor of Passover. The menu includes roasted chicken, hard boiled eggs, matzah, roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables, horseradish (from the garden), horosat and parsley with salt water. Each of the foods is representative of the seder plate: the chicken is representative of the sacrifice on the eve of the exodus from Egypt, horseradish is for the bitterness of slavery and horosat is the mortar and brick the Jewish people made for the Pharoh. The vegetables are the back breaking work, parsley and salt water are tears of the ancestors while the egg is the symbol of life.

PA Volunteer Appreciation Lunch- RSVP!

On May 6, the Parents' Association invites all who have volunteered in the classroom, for a field trip, in the library, at an athletic event, with Yankee Candle, Movie Night, Winterfest, or any of the many happenings at ESK, to a luncheon in appreciation for your service to ESK.  The lunch will be held at Lakeside Tavern at the Concord Marina from 11:30-1:00. To secure your reservation, a RSVP is requested by April 23 to Susan Darby (darby@esknoxville.org).

The Eighth Graders will leave Tuesday morning for Washington D.C. and return Friday, while the Seventh and Sixth Grade trips will be Wednesday through Friday. Seventh Grade students will travel to Atlanta, Ga., while Sixth Grade students will head to Chattanooga. Sustainability News

UT Visitors
On Friday, April 11, Fourth and Fifth Graders had a visit from students at the University of Tennessee majoring in environmental science and a presentation about the 5R's of Recycling.  It was great for our students to hear about sustainability from students and faculty at UT that are very knowledgeable and passionate about the environment.

Earth Day News and Notes
As Earth Day approaches on April 22, ESK Director of Sustainability Mr. Tannhauser wanted to encourage everyone to participate in eliminating or at least reducing the time we use electronics on that day.  National Screen Free Week runs May 5-11 but Mr. Tannhauser would at least like to encourage a screen free day on April 22.  Please check out http://www.screenfree.org/ for tips facts and lots of great recourses.

Mr. Tannhauser would also like to share a recipe for homemade laundry soap that was very kindly shared by ESK parent Ros Cadigan.

1~ 4lb 12oz box of Borax
1~ 4lb box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda
1~ 3lb 7oz box of Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda
1~3lb container Oxy Clean (Sun brand or store brand is much cheaper!)
4 bars Fels Naptha Soap, grated
2 containers Downy Un Stopables (1bottle of Purex Crystal is much cheaper- you do not have to use these.

Use food processor to grate soap. Then add in small amounts of the grated soap with some of the baking soda to the food processor with the regular blade to break the strands of soap up a bit more! Mix all the ingredients in a large heavy-duty garbage bag. Just close the bag securely and juggle back and forth until completely mixed. Scoop out into containers.

Use 2 Tbsp per load. Put directly in drum with clothes- not in the dispenser! Tip- a coffee scoop is usually 2T and the scoop in the Sun brand Oxy clean is usually 2T!

Makes about 30 cups - if you use 1/8 cup per load that should be 240 loads!

This can be used in HE top loading washer and it cleans clothes better than store bought liquid. All the ingredients can be found in the same aisle at Walmart!

Bags to Benches
ESK will be participating in a program sponsored by The Trex Decking Company called" Bags to Benches".  If ESK is able to collect 30,000 plastic bags, Trex Decking will donate a Trex bench to the school.  We will begin the program officially in September but Mr. Tannhauser wanted to get a heat start and what better day to get the head starts than April 22nd Earth Day.  Please send unwanted plastic bags with your child on April 22nd or anytime that week. This will serve as a great head start and bring awareness to Earth Day for our ESK community.
