SASEF Honorees

Eight ESK students exhibited their science fair projects this week at the 60th annual Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair, held at UT. Leoni Kunz, Saad Mohammed, Lu Warnke, Ben Aikens, Paige Gleason, Thomas Simunovic, Abigail Underwood, and Buchanan Underwood participated, along with about 200 students from around East Tennessee. Leoni, Saad, and Abigail earned Honorable Mention ribbons. Buchanan, Paige, and Thomas all won Certificates of Excellence. Leoni received a special award from the American Chemical Society, and Buchanan received a special award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Thomas was named Junior Division Reserve Champion, and earned the privilege of entering his work in the Broadcom MASTERS, the national science, technology, engineering, and math competition for U.S. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Thomas's project, "Magnetic Launcher," investigated the best way to propel a steel ball using magnetism. Congratulations to all of our SASEF participants!

 

Tate's Regional Science Fair

Several ESK Lower School students earned honors at the Tate's Regional Science Fair!

 

Meredith Clay: 1st Place in Physical Science, Fifth Grade / 2nd Place Grand Prize

Andrew Gilbert: 2nd Place in Physical Science, Fifth Grade

Chloe Johnson: 3rd Place in Life Science, Fifth Grade

H.J. Mirts: Honorable Mention in Physical Science, Fourth Grade

 

Fifth Graers Ryan Steadman, Alexa McCarren, Max Lancaster, Allison Clay, Henry Partridge and Fourth Graders Lily Atchley, Leah Busby, Thomas Rainey, Anna Enkema, Brynn Buckberry each earned "scientist awards". Congratulations to all!    

 

Wacky Tie and Sock Day

ESK students will have a unique opportunity tomorrow (Friday, April 11) to support research for spinal cord injury recovery. Eighth Grade Christa Jane McFarland is hosting the fundraiser as part of her portfolio project. With the purchase of a $1 ticket at carpool tomorrow, Lower School students can wear wacky socks while Middle School students can wear wacky ties or socks. Please join us in support of this special cause!

 

Octoball Blessing

The entire ESK Middle School along with Father Josh Hill and Headmaster Jay Secor gathered after chapel Wednesday morning for a blessing and ribbon cutting for the new octoball court, located next to the chicken coop. Father Josh performed the blessing while Mr. Secor cut the ribbon to officially open the octoball court for business. Students have already been enjoying the court as several gym classes took advantage of the nice weather this afternoon to get in a few games.  

 

PA Volunteer Appreciation Lunch- Save the Date and RSVP!

On May 6, the Parents' Association invites all who have volunteered in the classroom, for a field trip, in the library, at an athletic event, with Yankee Candle, Movie Night, Winterfest, or any of the many happenings at ESK, to a luncheon in appreciation for your service to ESK. The lunch will be held at Lakeside Tavern at the Concord Marina from 11:30-1:00. To secure our reservation, a RSVP is requested by April 23rd to Susan Darby (darby@esknoxville.org).

 

Yearbook Price Increases May 1! 

The end of the school year is just around the corner - don't miss out on your chance to take home this year's award-winning 2013-14 ESK yearbook. Online sales will continue until May 1. The cost is $40. After May 1, any remaining yearbooks can be purchased on distribution day for $45. But don't wait - get your book before they sell out!

Great Llama Race

A special thanks goes out to all those who participated in the Great Llama Race this past Saturday at World's Fair Park. The ESK llama looked great and a fun time was had by all!

Buy Your Tickets Now!

Don't be late for this very important date! 10th Annual Saints' Gala is right around the corner on Saturday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. This is the school's largest fundraiser and all proceeds from the evening will benefit the children of The Episcopal School with technology, athletics, library resources, fine arts, farm-to-table program, and tools for each classroom. Tickets are available for purchase online. While you are there, check out the silent and live items up for auction. New items are being added daily. Talent Show Coming!

Save the date for the ESK Lower School Talent Show scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. in the Kline Gymnasium. Keep an eye on Headlines for additional information as the date draws near.

Grace Point Summer Camps

The Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee sponsors numerous summer camps at Grace Point Camp & Retreat Center. Below is information regarding several of the offerings for the upcoming summer. Family Camp

Rising 1st, 2nd, 3rd graders w/parent. May 29 - June 1. $300 for 1 adult and 1 child.

 

Junior Camp

Rising 8th and 9th grades. June 13 - 18. $390 per camper.

 

Intermediate Camp

Rising 6th and 7th grades. June 21 - 26. $390 per camper.

 

Kid Camp

Rising 4th and 5th grades June 28 - July 3. $390 per camper.

Summer Session

Rising 4th through 12th grades. July 11 - 15. $330 per camper.

Tips For Spring

As we move into spring, lawn care is now in full swing. It is important that we are aware of what we are putting on our lawn and how we are taking care of it. As we strive to become a greener and a more sustainable community, we need to look at all aspects of our daily life. With lawn care is at its peak, let's all take a look at what we can do to better improve our lawns. Even if you hire someone to take care of your lawn, it is good to ask if they participate in green practices. Please take a look at this article for more tips and ideas.

Celebrate Literacy

ESK Second Graders Celeste Urdal, Ella Parker, Zoe Bremer and Ava Brownlie entered books into the Smoky Mountain Reading Council Celebrate Literacy contest. This week, Celeste was informed she has been selected by the Smoky Mountain Reading Council as a local winner for the story she submitted to the\contest. Her story has now been submitted to the state for judging. Great job Celeste, Ella, Zoe and Ava!

Summer Camps

 

Kindergarten Camp

ESK will hold its annual Kindergarten Camp for rising (or new) Kindergarten students June 2-5, Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

 

Theatre Camp -- "Cantamos Americanos: A Salute to the Music of Latin America"

Students in rising grades first through sixth are invited to participate in this camp June 9-13, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Singing, dancing, acting, improv, costumes and set design are part of activities for this exciting week. The final performance will be on Friday, June 13 at 11:30 a.m., with a potluck luncheon to follow. Registration began Monday, March 3, by emailing Dr. Sousa at sousa@esknoxville.org.

 

Minecraft Camps

This summer's camps will be held at ESK the week of June 9-13. A morning session, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., will be held for beginning players, and an afternoon session 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. for intermediate/advanced skills. Campers are welcome to sign up for both sessions, but afternoon attendees will want to have basic game skills already mastered.
