Duke TIP 4th-6th Grade Talent Search
A number of our students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades have qualified to participate in this year's highly selective 4th-6th Grade Talent Search sponsored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program.  Students qualify by scoring at the 95th percentile or above on selected subtests of a nationally known achievement tests (like ERB's CTP that we administer yearly to students in grades three through eight) and then register for the program.

Participants will have the opportunity to access online enrichment opportunities, gain recognition of their outstanding academic abilities, enjoy publications written just for them and submit their work for possible publication, enter the annual Duke TIP writing contest, and take advantage of the optional above-level EXPLORE test.  For more information about the Duke TIP Program, visit www.tip.duke.edu/456ts.

A Word from Fr. Joshua
February's Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in dedication to Anna Julia Heywood Cooper, an inspiring woman whose life can be read about here. While Cooper is not a canonized saint in the catholic sense, the Episcopal Church has dedicated a day to her memory: Feb 28th. When a person occupies a day on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church it is not necessarily because that person is considered a Saint. While Saints also appear on the calendar, often we celebrate and memorialize other noteworthy and contemporary figures.  When a figure is added to the calendar it is because the church believes the story of her life is instructive for the way we should pattern our lives. We celebrate the virtue of Cooper as an ethical model even as we offer our praise and thanksgiving to God in the Holy Eucharist.

"Pennies for Pencils"
Over the next two weeks, the ESK Interact Club will have jars in the Lower School supply store and in each Advisor's room in the Middle School to collect change for the "Pennies for Pencils" fundraiser. All the funds collected for this will go to Africa Education and Leadership Institute. This Institute, headed by Anita Henderlight, provides education to children in South Sudan. Please help us educate kids on the other side of the world by raiding your couches and change cups and donating to a wonderful cause.

Fourth Graders (l-r) Brynn, Whitney and Camilla sell their bracelets to raise money for "Pennies for Pencils".
A large group of Fourth Grade girls have been selling bracelets to classmates and ESK staff in order to raise funds for Pennies for Pencils. The bracelets are made out of rubber bands using a rainbow loom. The jewelry ranges from $.50 to $2.00.
