MLK Day Holiday

There will be no school on Monday, Jan. 20, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

All Episcopal School of Knoxville students, faculty members and families are invited to march in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade for the twelfth year.

Those who wish to participate will meet at ESK at 7:30 a.m. A school bus will transport the ESK group to St. Luke's Episcopal Church (600 South Chestnut St.) for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Following breakfast, the bus will shuttle marchers to the start of the parade. The bus will meet participants at the end of the parade and bring them back to St. Luke's for a pizza lunch. The bus will depart for ESK around noon. Students and families may choose to carpool separately if they wish.

Students are encouraged to wear ESK gear and carry posters featuring inspirational Dr. King quotes along the parade route.

The ESK marchers will be part of a larger delegation that typically includes members of Episcopal churches in the Diocese of East Tennessee, as well as the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. Our participation is an ongoing reflection of the church's historic involvement in issues concerning social justice.

Please email Father Josh at hill@esknoxville.org if you are planning to come and how you plan to travel (bus or car).

Knoxville Opera Presents "The Elixir of Love"

The Knoxville Opera's production of "The Elixir of Love" made a stop at ESK on Thursday morning as part of their school outreach program. UT School of Music alumni Jennifer D'Agostino and Kevin Doherty will perform the roles of Adina and Dr. Dulcamara along with Texas tenor Sergio Cepeda in the role of Nemorino. Executive Director and Conductor Brian Salesky provided narration and music for the show.

The full production of "The Elixir of Love" will be at the Tennessee Theater on Friday, February 14 and Sunday, February 16. For more information, please visit KnoxvilleOpera.com.

Re-Enrollment Information Available Soon

Re-enrollment information for 2014-2015 school year will be sent electronically the first week of February. The deadline for Financial Aid applications is February 1, 2014.   While you will be asked to upload or send your 2013-14 tax return directly to School and Student Services, financial aid decisions can be made prior to receiving your completed return. Once it is received, the tax return information will be used to verify income and awards may be adjusted accordingly. In order to determine financial aid awards prior to the re-enrollment contract deadline of February 21, 2014 it is imperative that we receive completed Parent Financial Statements in a timely manner. Please be in touch with Susan Denton (865-218-4488) if you have any questions.

Holiday Bureau Collection Underway

It's time to clean out closets and find new homes for all those old toys, children's clothing, bikes, tricycles, scooters, books, TVs, computers, and other items. On Monday, January 13, the first grade classes at the Episcopal School began collecting donations for their service project, the Holiday Bureau.

What is the Holiday Bureau?

It is an all-volunteer organization in Oak Ridge that collects old toys and other items and cleans them up to distribute to needy families in Anderson and Roane Counties the following December.

What can I donate? The Holiday Bureau accepts a wide variety of used items including toys, board games, puzzles, dolls, stuffed animals, books, play furniture, bikes, tricycles, scooters, skateboards, TVs, computers, radios, CD players, and children's clothing.

When can I donate? We will be collecting donations from Monday, January 13 through Monday, January 27. Please drop your donations off in the middle hallway in the lower school.

Over the last 12 years, the Episcopal School has become a huge part of the Holiday Bureau's collections each year, and we appreciate your support of such a worthy organization.

If you have any questions please email Chris Bishop at bishop@esknoxville.org or Anna Ottaviano at ottaviano@esknoxville.org.

Kimberly Davis will assist guidance teacher Lois Ross in her work with ESK students this semester. Ms. Davis is currently a Child and Family Studies and Psychology student at The University of Tennessee. The University encourages students nearly finished with their degree to seek experiences in the community to enrich themselves in areas of interest prior to graduation in May. Ms. Davis feels her purpose and calling is to pursue counseling, specifically within the school systems. Davis is overwhelmed and deeply thankful for the opportunity to have an experience at a school as excellent as ESK. She hopes to attend graduate school after her internship with Mrs. Ross.

ESK Welcomes Library Lions

Lower School Librarian Miranda Clark welcomed a pair of lions that will now sit guard outside the Clayton Family in the Brewington Family Lower School, much as there is a pair of stone lions outside the entrance to the New York Public Library in New York City, N.Y. The month of January in the library started with discussion on the function of libraries and the reading of books that included lions as the main character.

Learning Code

Seventh Grader Thomas shows off his work with code.

Before Christmas Break, Second through Eighth graders participated in The Hour of Code at code.org.  This was a beginner's look at computer science.  The goal of the website was to get 10,000,000 students to participate, and to date they have had over 22,000,000 participate.  The students enjoyed it so much that Mr. Tannhauser decided to have the Fourth through Eighth grade sign up for an additional 20-25 hour course. The work will be done both in the classroom and at home. Students will learn some of the important concepts of computer programming such as functions, loops, conditionals, and variables.  Code.org has been a great tool for students, teaching and giving them an intro to computer science.
