Holiday Bureau Collection Starts Monday

It's time to clean out closets and find new homes for all those old toys, children's clothing, bikes, tricycles scooters, books, TVs, computers, and other items. On Monday, January 13, the first grade classes at the Episcopal School will begin collecting donations for their service project, the Holiday Bureau.

What is the Holiday Bureau?

It is an all-volunteer organization in Oak Ridge that collects old toys and other items and cleans them up to distribute to needy families in Anderson and Roane Counties the following December.

What can I donate? The Holiday Bureau accepts a wide variety of used items including toys, board games, puzzles, dolls, stuffed animals, books, play furniture, bikes, tricycles, scooters, skateboards, TVs, computers, radios, CD players, and children's clothing.

When can I donate? We will be collecting donations from Monday, January 13 through Monday, January 27. Please drop your donations off in the middle hallway in the lower school.

Over the last 12 years, the Episcopal School has become a huge part of the Holiday Bureau's collections each year and we appreciate your support of such a worthy organization.

If you have any questions please email Chris Bishop at bishop@esknoxville.org or Anna Ottaviano at  ottaviano@esknoxville.org.

MLK Day Holiday

There will be no school on Monday, Jan. 20, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

All Episcopal School of Knoxville students, faculty members and families are invited to march in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade for the twelfth year. The 2014 Parade route will stretch from the Tabernacle Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Avenue to Greater Warner A.M.E. Church in Burlington. Parents should plan to take their children to the parade route or arrange a carpool for them.  The ESK marchers will be part of a larger delegation that typically includes members of Episcopal churches in the Diocese of East Tennessee, as well as the Episcopal Peace Fellowship.  Our participation is an ongoing reflection of the church's historic involvement in issues concerning social justice.

ESK students will meet for breakfast at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 600 S. Chestnut Street and lunch will be provided following the event. Please contact Father Josh via email at hill@esknoxville.org, if you wish to attend. More details will be available soon.

Calling Team ESK for a 5K!

Weather Alerts

As true winter weather has come, please remember our snow closing policy. ESK does not follow the public schools' snow day schedule. Based on hazardous road conditions, we may be closed for the day or may open late. School closings or late opening announcements will be made via our Parent Alert text, Twitter alerts and voice mail system as well as on local radio and television stations by 7:00 a.m. If road conditions continue to deteriorate, the school may announce later it is closed for the entire day. Therefore, it is important to keep listening for updates. If you feel that road conditions in your area are not safe for travel, please keep your child at home for the day. As always, the safety of our students is ESK's top priority.

Tips for Using Tech Devices Safely

Kids get new devices over the holidays? Here are a few sites that can help your family deal with Internet safety and digital citizenship issues. Take a moment and check them out!

Common Sense Media:

This is a fantastic resource for app and game ratings, internet safety information for parents and students and more.

Netsmartz:

Resources for parents, teens and kids on cyberbullying, online predators and Internet safety. Includes safety pledges, a great place to start a conversation with your kids about what is acceptable use and what is not.

iKeep Safe:

Introduces 6 Pillars of Digital Citizenship and Wellness. Also includes a free downloadable Parents Guide to Facebook.

Most important of all just keep the lines of communication open with your children. Keep aware of the apps and sites they are using regularly, with close attention to apps like SnapChat, WhatsApp, Vine, Instagram, Kik and others kids spend more time on than Facebook.   If you have questions about ESK's Responsible Use Policy, COPPA, or about internet safety at home or school, please feel free to email Director of Technology Julie King.

Please let us know if you or anyone in your family has trouble receiving Headlines! We will send it to anyone who wants to receive it.
