December 19, 2013
The mission of The Episcopal School of Knoxville is to prepare students for higher education and a lifetime of learning within the context of a loving, inclusive and family-centered community. We enrich our students' intellectual, physical, cultural and spiritual growth so that they may realize their potential as children of God and citizens of the world.
As the year comes to a close, ESK would like to extend a special holiday greeting to all of our students, families, friends, faculty, staff and supporters. It is the people of ESK that make it such a special place and create a feeling of community that is hard to match.

We hope that each and everyone of you enjoys a wonderful holiday season with your families and friends, and return to school in January rested and ready to go for another exciting and wonderful semester at ESK!

Middle School Evening Prayer and Carol Service
The Middle School Christmas Program was held Tuesday at the Church of the Ascension on Northshore Drive. Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade Chorus presented an evening of Christmas music accompanied by Ashley Parham on flute and Kimberly Simpkins on violin. Thanks to these musicians for your contribution to the evening.

The concert began with a beautiful rendition of "Still is the Night" by the Eighth Grade chorus. The singing followed with "O Come Let Us Adore Him" and several other hymns, including "Joyous Light of Heavenly Glory", "What Child is This" and "One Candle". The following Eighth Grade students had solos during the performance: Addison Jones, Lauren Reed, Grace Taylor and Damon Rodefer. The evening closed with "Angels We Have Heard on High", which included the audience joining in. ESK gives special thanks to Dr. Deborah Sousa and Meagan Langford for directing such a wonderful performance. A reception of cookies and beverages followed the concert.

Kindergarten/First Grade Christmas Program
The Kindergarten and First Grade classes closed out the second week of December with their own Christmas Program. The students from Mrs. Noland's, Mrs. Saliba's, Mr. Bishop's, and Mrs. Ottaviano's classes put on a wonderful show for their families and friends. The children opened the program with "Get Ready" and "Will You Be Ready for the Light" and wowed the crowd with such holiday favorites as "Jingle Bells" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". Other highlights included "Il Est Ne" and "Must be Santa". The students shared cookies and hot chocolate with their guests following the performance.

Special Treat in Chapel
ESK students got a special treat during Chapel last Friday when Carson and Lauren Davis's grandmother brought back frankincense and myrrh from a trip to Oman. Father Josh Hill perfumed the myrrh so that students could smell it and experience the impact of incense. Incense has been used for years in the Church and in the Jerusalem temple before that. The priest Zechariah was stoking the incense when the angel came with the news that he would be the father of John the Baptist. Incense provides a window into a multisensory experience of prayer and God's presence. Students can see the plumes of smoke rising and are reminded that our prayers rise to God and at the same time linger in the room to surround all worshippers. Smell is the sense that is most strongly connected to memory. Through incense, we have an avenue to the memory of all our sacred experiences and God's action in our history.
