Lower School Christmas Program

Second through Fifth Grade students put on a spectacular show Tuesday night at St. John's Cathedral in downtown Knoxville. The program featured holiday classics such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Silent Night" as well as other favorites like "Will You Be Ready for the Light?" and "Rise Up Shepherds." Students sang songs in many different languages, including Spanish, French, German and Latin. Fifth Grade students provided the narration and Fourth Grade students participated in the Nativity Tableau. A special thanks to Choral Director Deb Sousa for coordinating this cherished annual tradition.

NOTICE: A camera memory card adapter and two navy blue blazers (Stafford Essentials and Saddlebred Performance brands) were found at St. John's Cathedral after Tuesday's performance. Please let Sharon in the Middle School Office know if these items belong to you.

Winterfest

ESK students help out at the Work Builder's Block party during Winterfest.

The Parent Association's annual Winterfest event took place Saturday morning throughout the halls of ESK. We had a record number of families and friends attend and the weather was spectacular. Students and families enjoyed a visit from Santa, making gingerbread houses, a drink walk, inflatable slide, photo booth with Santa, a holiday market and making holiday crafts. Special thanks to Emily Bozeman, chair of the event, and everyone involved with making this event such a success!

Spelling Bee

2013 ESK Spelling Bee winner Paige Gleason.

The Kline Gymnasium was full of excitement last Friday afternoon as the student body gathered for the annual Spelling Bee. Seventeen contestants were chosen for the event through individual class spelling bees. Seventh Grader Paige Gleason won the bee for the first time. Classmate Frances James and Fourth Grader Sam Kelso finished second and third, respectively.

Paige will now compete at the News Sentinel Southern Appalachia Regional Spelling Bee at Alumni Memorial Building on the UT campus on March 8, 2014. The first round of the spelling bee is a written test, which is held in the morning. The test will be graded over a lunch break, and the students with the top 50 - 60 scores will be announced and called on stage to compete in the oral bee at 1 p.m. The winner of the oral bee will be named Regional Champion and will represent our area at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Mitten Tree Service Project

For their service project, Ms. O'Donnell's advisory is creating a "Mitten Tree" (or two) by collecting gently used or new hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves of all sizes. Students will be decorating several trees with these items for St. Luke's extensive outreach programs in East Knoxville. Please donate to us this week and next! Brightly colored donation boxes with "Mitten Tree" flyers are located in Googe Hall for the Middle School and near the art room and office of the Lower School. Donations can also be dropped off in Ms. O'Donnell's room 130 in the Middle School. We appreciate your support of our project and of families who need some extra help!

Sustainability/Garden News

Study of Yeast

In Garden class this week, students learned about the properties of yeast. When yeast begins the proofing process, it reacts with the sugar to create carbon dioxide. As a way of showing this, Mr. Tannhauser put a balloon over the mouth of a bottle which contained proofing yeast to see if the gas created would be enough to blow up the balloon and in every case it was. The students also watched clips of movies that explored the importance of yeast in our day-to-day world.

Going Green at Christmas: Tips to Help You Go Green This Christmas

Christmas Cards: Buy recycled paper (not plastic) cards without lots of decorations, otherwise these cannot be recycled. Around 744 million cards are sent each Christmas and if all these were made from recycled paper, it would save the equivalent of 248,000 trees. Alternatively send an e-card; there are lots of websites, which allow you to do this for free. And remember you can reuse cards as gift tags next year!

Presents: Buy presents with minimal packaging, or those packaged with recycled materials. When wrapping presents make sure you use recycled wrapping paper. On Christmas day as you are ripping open presents, don't throw your wrapping paper in the bin or fireplace, instead reuse it next year or recycle it. On average, more than 8,000 tons of wrapping paper are used to wrap presents in a year - the equivalent of more than 50,000 trees!

If you receive electrical goods as gifts, don't throw your old ones away. Recycle them or donate them to your local community centre, school or charity.
