October 24, 2013
The mission of The Episcopal School of Knoxville is to prepare students for higher education and a lifetime of learning within the context of a loving, inclusive and family-centered community. We enrich our students' intellectual, physical, cultural and spiritual growth so that they may realize their potential as children of God and citizens of the world.

Welcome back! We hope that everyone had an enjoyable and restful Fall Break! It's been great having the kids back in school this week and the buzz around campus is as fevered as ever!

ESK will be full of activity over the next few weeks with the Halloween concert and costume parade, the start of basketball, Tall Tales Readers' Theater and the Middle School Hayride. Check out all the details in this week's edition of Headlines!

Episcopal School Sunday

ESK Chaplain Father Josh Hill invites all families to attend the 10 a.m. service at your local Episcopal parish this Sunday, October 24. At all Knox area Episcopal Churches, a student(s) from our school will stand during the announcements and ask all current and former ESK families who are in attendance to stand as the student invites anyone interested to attend the ESK Open House that afternoon from 2-4.

We want a strong showing that will showcase our school community's pride and positive outlook to prospective families.   If you haven't attended in a while, don't worry! All our parishes are quite welcoming, and you can find service times on respective websites of parishes. Here are the parishes he hopes you will attend:

Ascension, St. John's, St. Elizabeth's, St. Luke's, Good Shepherd and St. James'.

If you cannot attend, we hope you will help by making a personal invitation to a prospective family.

Design Thinking

Lower School and Middle School faculty, along with administrators, participated in a workshop last Thursday focused on Design Thinking. The course was created by the d.school at Stanford University and facilitated by Curriculum Coordinator Cary Busby. Teachers practiced design thinking by interviewing each other, thinking of multiple solutions, and developing physical prototypes to represent their developing ideas. Teachers then brainstormed questions we face at ESK that might be solved by using the Design Thinking process.

Holy Eucharist

All ESK students celebrated Holy Eucharist in honor of St. James of Jerusalem during Lower School and Middle School Chapel on Wednesday. It was great as always to see the family and friends who attended. The next Holy Eucharist day is November 19 in honor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.

Simpson Family Farm Visit

ESK Kitchen Manager Renee Nye and Kitchen Assistant Lisa Nix visited Simpson Family Farm in Niota, Tenn., Tuesday afternoon as part of a group tour with Sysco. Renee and Lisa joined chefs from Cherokee Country Club, Seasons and Sunspot for a tour of the farm's facilities and to get an up-close and personal look at the life of the cattle. Farm owner Jim Simpson is very proud of the peaceful environment they have created for the cattle.

The grass-fed beef that ESK purchases comes from this particular farm. When discussing how they run their kitchen at school, the fellow chefs on the tour were very impressed with all that ESK is able to do and what they accomplish on a daily basis. Renee and Lisa said it was a great experience!

Alumni World Language Survey

ESK Middle School teacher Curtis Bower is conducting a survey for any alumnus or alumna of ESK who took a world language during his/her time at our school. It will help ESK to better assess how we have served our students in the past and help to determine how ESK might better serve students in the future in the World Language department. Please take a couple of minutes and fill out the short, 10-question survey. Thank you all so much!

Annual Fund

Our annual fund campaign is in full swing at ESK! We are striving for 100% parent participation this year. If you would like to make your gift today, please visit our secure online giving site. Contact Ryan Sparks, Director of Development, at sparks@esknoxville.org or 865-218-4462 with any questions.

ESK will be dialing for dollars for the annual fund in November. If you would like to volunteer to make some calls, please contact Ryan Sparks.

School Picture Proofs

Retakes of school pictures were taken Wednesday in the Clayton Family Library. Proofs will be sent home when they arrive on campus.

Math Olympiad

A new learning opportunity is now available to students in Fifth through Eighth Grade at ESK. Students can now participate in the Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools, which provide opportunities for children to engage in creative problem solving activities while developing children's abilities to reason, to be logical, to be resourceful, and occasionally to be ingenious.

Students will practice regularly under the direction of Mrs. Foss and Mrs. Stivers in preparation for five monthly Olympiad contests (held on ESK campus during the afternoon meeting time). Math Olympiad meets weekly for an hour, either Tuesday mornings at 7:00 or Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 - 4:30. Olympiad members explore a topic and strategy in depth during the meeting. Contest dates include November 13, December 11, January 15, February 12 and March 12 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

If you are interested in having your child participate, please contact Mrs. Foss by tomorrow (Friday, October 25).

Vote for Educator of the Month

As many of you know our second grade teacher, Lucy Tyler, was nominated for Educator of the Week through a program sponsored by the Tennessee Lottery. After being nominated for Educator of the Week, Mrs. Tyler has the chance to become Educator of the Month. Her winning is now dependent on our voting for her as an ESK family.

Please go to: www.seehowitaddsup.com/educator/, find Mrs. Tyler's picture and click on the word "vote." You may vote once a day for the entire month of October and you may vote from each device you have--laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc. If all of us vote once a day we have a good chance of having an Educator of the Month right here at ESK!

AfterCare Service Project

ESK AfterCare Director Sarah Dew would like to ask all students and families to collect labels from SunnyD products to help AfterCare earn free books! Twenty Sunny D labels equals 20 free books! For a complete list of eligible products, please visit SunnyD.com. Labels can be turned in to your grade-level teacher or advisor until Wednesday, November 20.

The third open house is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2-4 p.m. If you have questions (or for more information), please contact Admissions Director Susan Denton via email at denton@esknoxville.org.

Art News

Support Art in Your School!

It is Original Works time again! For those of you new to the school, this is an opportunity to have your child's art on a product such as a t-shirt or night light. The merchandise is of good quality and very popular among our students. All profit goes toward the ESK art program. In the past, we have been able to buy pottery wheels and a printing press with your support.

Lower School students should have received a packet earlier this week and Middle School students can obtain a packet from Mr. Hoffman.

Your child has the liberty to complete artwork at home as well. The work must be 8-1/2 x 11 and on card stock-- no glitter, metallic colors, or three-dimensional material.

This opportunity will last until Nov. 4 - SO ACT NOW!! Checks should be made out to ESK and returned to your homeroom teacher. Please support art in your school.
