STEMspark Grant

Congratulations to Middle School science teacher Cary Busby who this week was awarded a STEMspark minigrant for the Eighth Grade robotics engineering program. Grants were read and scored by a team of six grant readers, all science and mathematics faculty members at STEMspark higher education partner institutions. There were many excellent projects submitted, providing a significant challenge to the grant readers. The funded grants will affect more than 6500 students across grades K-12 in nine different school systems across our region.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents' Day last Friday was a huge success! About 400 grandparents and special friends attended the wonderful event. Guests enjoyed tea and cookies from the ESK kitchen, a special chapel service and program and classroom visits. We appreciate our grandparents and special friends, and we thank you for attending.

Auction Winner

Congratulations to Terry and Leslie Bazzoon, winners of the 10th Annual Saints' Gala Online Auction! The Bazzoon Family will enjoy a week's stay at Westgate Town Center in Kissimmee, FL. Guests are provided all the comforts of a fully furnished home just one mile from Walt Disney World Resort and minutes from other Orlando area attractions. Thank you for your support of ESK and the 10th Annual Saints' Gala!

Banana Splits

Banana Splits is a voluntary peer support group for students whose family structure has changed, whether it is through separation, divorce, death, remarriage, or living with a guardian or relative. The goal of ESK's Banana Splits group is to help students cope successfully with their family structure by engaging in fun activities with their peers who have experienced similar family changes.

To participate in Banana Splits:

* Parent permission is requested. You know your child best, and you are the best judge about the appropriateness of a peer support group for your child.

* Participation is voluntary. Not every child who has experienced divorce wants to participate (although most do!). Also, children may decide for themselves when they want to attend and when they do not want to. Even within the group, the child can choose his/her own level of participation. A child never has to answer a question or discuss a topic that might make him/her uncomfortable (the Tribes Agreement "Right to Pass").

* Confidentiality is important. Children are encouraged to share with their parents anything we do or talk about in the group, and their own thoughts and feelings, but not to share anyone else's information.

There are two different groups, one for students in grades 1-5, and the other for students in grades 6-8, meeting one day per week. Lower School students will meet in the Clayton Library for 30 minutes each Friday afternoon. Middle School students will meet in Mrs. Ross's classroom during Friday's advisory time. Mr. Bower assists with the Middle School group. The first meetings will take place on Friday, November 1.

Please discuss participation in Banana Splits with your child, if he or she fits the criteria for participation. If your child wants to participate, please email Lois Ross, School Counselor at ross@esknoxville.org, or you may call 777-9032, ext. 288.

Sustainability News

Recycle Bowl Challenge

ESK will be participating In the Keep America Beautiful Recycle Bowl Challenge from October 21 - November 16. ESK already does a great job of recycling but we thought it would be great to put our school to the test and see how we stack up state wide and nationally. ESK is the only school in Knoxville competing and one of 26 schools in the state. We think this will be a great way to increase awareness for recycling at our school and put some numbers behind the materials that we collect. Please continue or start having conversations at home about recycling and composting. This is just a little something we can all do to keep our communities clean and beautiful.
