The mission of The Episcopal School of Knoxville is to prepare students for higher education and a lifetime of learning within the context of a loving, inclusive and family-centered community. Father Josh's Ordination

The Right Reverend George D. Young III, Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee, presided over the ordination of Father Joshua Ashton Hill to the sacred order of the priests Tuesday at The Episcopal School of Knoxville.

SK students serve as acolytes for the ordination service. Front Row (L-R) Alex Carter, Parker Jones, McLean Stooksberry, Hallie Longest, Back Row (L-R) Andrew Natter, Zach Stivers, Josh Hill, Addison Jones

"It was incredibly special to be surrounded by so many friends--young and old--who have walked by my side during different stages of my journey towards this day," Hill said. "The love was thick."

Bishop George Young, along with other clergy members from the East Tennessee and surrounding areas, lays his hands on Father Joshua Ashton Hill during the service.

Nearly 40 clergy from East Tennessee and surrounding areas, along with family and friends of Hill and parents and supporters of ESK, were in attendance for the ordination.

The service, although typically held in a cathedral setting, was hosted in the school's Kline Gymnasium. First and Second Grade students along with the Eighth Grade chorus provided special music while Fifth Grade students shared a dramatic reading. According to The Reverend Daniel Heischman, Executive Director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, Hill's ordination was one of only a handful he can remember taking place at a school. Please visit the ESK Facebook page for photos and video from the event.

Back to School Nights

Middle School and Lower School parents, please join us for Back to School Nights on Wednesday, Sept. 4 (MS) and Thursday, Sept. 5 (LS). It's an opportunity to see the course of the students' day and become familiar with their teachers. The events will be 6:30-8 p.m. No students should be in attendance.

Sustainability Update

Welcome back everyone! This year's focus on sustainability with our students is food waste and the question "Where does our food come from?" We will start composting in our lunches next week and once a month we will do a school-wide food waste competition. It will be a challenge to see how low we can get our food waste. We decided to start our awareness by keeping track of the food waste at our Back to School BBQ. We had roughly 90 pounds of food waste for about 425 people, which comes out to about .2 pounds per person.

Please feel free to email Director of Sustainability Brett Tannhauser at tannhauser@esknoxville.org with any thoughts, comments, or ideas that you may have. We want our sustainability initiative to be community wide and involve everyone at ESK.

The Parent's Association is trying to earn money to purchase a new commercial mixer for the school's kitchen. Here are some quick and easy ways you can help:

Boxtops - We have collected over 800 boxtops in just the first week of school!  Continue sending boxtops to school with your child - each is worth 10 cents and they add up quickly!  ESK also automatically earns money if you do your internet shopping through www.boxtops4education.com.  Check it out and contact Rachel Hacker if you have any questions at rachel@mcbreartycapital.com

Target - Now through September 21st Target is donating $1 for every vote our school gets on http://givewith.target.com/.  You will need to use your Facebook login to vote - you are allowed to vote once per week to put it on your weekly calendar!

Coke Rewards - Inside the package of Coke Products (including DASANI water, Powerade, Coke Zero, Sprite, etc) you will find a coke rewards number.  Log on to www.mycokerewards.com and enter the codes to earn easy points.  You can then donate these points to ESK who can, in turn, trade points in for school supplies such as pencils, paper, erasers, footballs, bulletin boards, televisions, etc.

Kellogg - Inside Kellogg packages are Family reward codes that can be entered at www.kelloggsfamilyrewards.com.  You can then donate them to ESK to be traded in for school supplies.

Target Red (Visa) Card - Link your Target Red Visa Card online to ESK and our school will automatically earn money every time you make purchases with your Target Card.

Library News

Lower School Library Books
Lower school students happily began checking out books last week, so check your students' bag to see if a great new bedtime story has come home with them. Students in grades K-2 are allowed to check out 2 books at a time. Students in grades 3-5 are allowed to check out the same number of books as their grade level. All students may keep their library books for up to a week. Parents are also encouraged to borrow books and may check out additional books for their children. Library materials may also be renewed as long as no one else is waiting for them to be returned. The school library is a wonderful place to begin practicing the procedures of borrowing and returning, so please help your student remember to return their books on their library day. No late fees are charged for library books, however students may not check out new books until their old books are returned. If in the unfortunate event that a library book is lost or severely damaged a replacement fee will be requested.

If you would like to talk more about your child's specific reading needs or interests and get suggestions or make requests, please feel free to drop by the lower school library to visit with Mrs. Clark or send an email.
