First Grade Neighborhoods

Students in Mr. Bishop's and Mrs. Ottaviano's First Grade classes began a unit on families and neighborhoods last week. This will serve as a basic introduction to civics and how communities work together to solve problems. The students began with identifying the setting and the characters. For the setting, they used boxes donated by parents to create a 3D neighborhood. The students are now creating families for their houses. Each person in the family will have a biography complete with name, age, job, favorite food and favorite things to do.

Here is a look at the neighborhood constructed by Mr. Bishop's First Grade students.

The ESK Varsity soccer team in action against Concord Christian on Monday afternoon.

Both ESK soccer teams took the field ready to play this week, each competing in two games. On Monday, the teams were on the road against Concord Christian, which was a strong match up. JV defense player Rosie Lambercht made several great defensive stops but Concord's quick feet allowed them several great goals. Forward player Hutch Peter rallied with two goals and midfielder Mason Stivers also scored a goal. Though the scoring came at a great time, the Saints fell short to Concord.

Varsity followed the JV action and played their hearts out. Concord struck early with 4 quick goals. Florentine Kunz answered in the first half with a great shot inside the 18 to put the Saints on the board. Midfielder Nick Lovely had one goal in mind- to score- and he did just that. Making 2 goals, the Saints were in reach of Concord. Although Concord answered back with 2 more goals, the Saints did not give up. The Varsity team fought till the end.

On Wednesday, ESK traveled to take on St. Joseph. Both teams knew they would be a tough match up, but were ready for the challenge. The JV players did not give up one second. Alex Carter had the only goal of the game, which came from a great set up from Melia Hurst.

The Varsity match up was a rough one. After two goals in the first moments of the game, the Saints' got their head in the game and started playing. Nick Lovely, Sarah Jane Kline, and Ellie Lai took some hard hits, but they did not lose their drive to try to stop St. Joseph. The team kept St. Joseph from scoring again until late in the second half. The Saints were not able to produce a goal because of St. Joseph's defense despite great effort. Goalkeepers Zach Stivers and Ethan Baughman have several great stops for the Saints.

A few Middle School students represented ESK in the Oak Ridge Invitational track meet Monday afternoon. In a large field of 12 teams, several Saints put together strong performances. Eighth Grader Nick Lovely placed third in the 3200-meter race with a time of 11:54. Sixth Grader Riley Schumaker placed ninth out of 44 in the mile event. Riley was the first Sixth Grade finisher and improved his time to 5:39. Sixth Grader Will Fowler also had a person best in the 100 meter, as did classmate Owen Blake in the shot put and discus. The team returns to action another meet on Thursday.

Softball

Coaches: David Spates, Pansie Evans, Cayla Wilson

The ESK softball team played a hard-fought game on Monday at Lakeshore Park, falling 9-7 to the Lady Rebel Blues. The game marked significant improvement in the team, including numerous "firsts" in ESK softball. Fifth-grader Veronica Killeffer scored the first run in ESK softball history, and the team enjoyed its first lead of the season, 3-0 at one point. Seventh-grader and pitcher Christa McFarland started on the mound and turned in a strong performance. Sixth-grader Hannah Nye played solidly at first base, and Killeffer, playing behind the plate, threw out a would-be base stealer. All of the girls -- Natalie Dawkins, Eleanor Tant, McLean Stooksberry, Erin Wallace, Bevin Coburn, Lindsey Stallworth, Gaia Winston and Anna Spates -- played hard and showed progress from the season opener. The team's next game is Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. on Pilot Field in Lakeshore Park.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
