Happy Thursday! It has been another busy week at ESK with the Trial of Alexander T. Wolf, the Middle School Spring Musical and the Hams for the Hungry service project! Check out all the details in this week's edition of Headlines.

 

We hope that everyone enjoys a safe and restful Spring Break as well as a blessed Easter! Remember that school resumes on Tuesday, April 2, as there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, April 1 in honor of Easter Monday.

 

New Security Officers

On Wednesday morning, ESK parents gathered in the Bishop Center Dining Hall for an opportunity to meet new security guards Doug Harter and Anthony Morabito. Both talked about their backgrounds and plans for enhanced security measures at ESK. Mr. Harter and Mr. Morabito each have military backgrounds, experience in the security field, and have passed rigorous background and competency tests. The Security Desk is located outside the Business Office, and this is where you will now sign in when you come for lunch with your child. Let's welcome them both to the ESK family!

Parent Sports Survey Meeting

Please join Board members Amy Schumaker and Scott Batey in the Googe Dining Hall at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, April 5 to express your feelings about the future of the sports program at ESK. To assist the committee in formulating our new Master Plan, it is important that the Board hear from parents.  Please come prepared to share your ideas about interscholastic and intramural sport offerings at ESK. Murder at Crooked House!

The Middle School Chorus production of "Murder at Crooked House" was a wonderful success! Music Director Deb Sousa led another hit production in the high-suspense mystery shown twice on Tuesday. Philip Hoffman designed the sets.  

 

ESK students from Kindergarten to Eighth Grade got a sneak peek of the play Tuesday afternoon.  

 

Congratulations to Dr. Sousa and the talented cast which included Eleanor Tant, Erin Wallace, Peter Cooper, Abi Wilson, Bevin and Braden Coburn, Nick Lovely, Mary Margaret Banick, Piper Vassallo, Damon Rodefer (in a hysterical role as Colonel Chutney), Calder Woodward, Lindsey Stallworth, Nathan Cooley, Grace Taylor, Rosie Lambrecht and Lauren Wise!

Hams for the Hungry

The Fourth Grade classes have been raising money for Hams for the Hungry this last week as part of their community service project. Beginning Friday, students at ESK had several opportunities to donate to this great cause, including Free Dress Day, purchasing snacks at the bake sale and Jazzy Jars and finally Wacky Hat Wednesday. Each student could purchase a ticket to wear a hat to school Wednesday. Both Mrs. Bornemann and Mrs. Hoover's classes picked winners for Wacky Hat day. The winners were Second Grader Isabella Raman, First Grader Keagan McCoy and Middle School students Damon Rodefer, and Steven Busby. The Fourth Grade raised a total $2,094.73 for Hams for the Hungry. Thank you to everyone who donated to this great cause!!

Holy Eucharist

Just a reminder that tomorrow (Friday, March 22), ESK will celebrate Holy Eucharist in honor of Easter. There will be an all-school chapel at 10:30 a.m. prior to Early Dismissal. Reverend Caroline Vogel will assist Father Josh Hill with the service. Keep in mind this will be a formal uniform day.

 

Early Dismissal TOMORROW

Just a reminder - due to Early Dismissal tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. there will be NO Aftercare. All students should be picked up at 11:30 a.m.

 

ESKamp

Looking for something to do this summer? ESK has just what you're looking for: ESKamp! During the month of June, ESK will be offering a number of enrichment summer camps ranging from technology and art to music theater and dance. Open Registration for non-ESK students begins on April 8th! Reserve your spot NOW! The camps will run from June 3-28 with a morning and afternoon session. All camps will be $150 per student. Online registration is now available at eskamp.org.

Boy Scouts

On Wednesday evening, three Fifth Grade boys crossed over to Boy Scouts and received the Arrow of Light. The Arrow of Light is the highest award given to a Cub Scout and is the only award that can be worn on a Boy Scout uniform. Each of these boys started in Boy Scouts in First Grade as Tiger Cubs. Congratulations to Cooper Goethert, Andrew Taylor and Luke Fowler for achieving this great honor!

9th Annual Saints Gala

Save the Date: May 11! Invitations for The 9th Annual Saints' Gala, "An Evening on the Hilltop, Celebrating the Flavors of Tennessee", will be mailed soon. If you would like to be a Sponsor click on the link: Join Me at the Gala! The auction and dinner are the school's largest fundraiser to help provide students with the tools for Technology, Athletics, Library Resources, and Fine Arts for each classroom. The Episcopal School will host a fun-filled evening with fresh food stations to represent products within the state of Tennessee. Save the Date

Lord willing, The Rt. Rev. George Young, Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee will ordain Joshua A. Hill, Chaplain at ESK, to the priesthood in The Episcopal Church. The ordination will occur in The Kline gymnasium at ESK on August 27, 2013 at 10am. Parents and family members are encouraged to attend.

The Trial of Alexander/Alexandra T. Wolf

Mr. Bishop's first grade class held its annual Trial of Alexander T. Wolf on Tuesday. In this event, "witnesses" to the devouring of the Three Pigs are called to testify, including the Angel Pigs. The jury, made up of Third Graders, then decide if the wolf is guilty based on testimony by several different characters including the pigs, their family, doctors in town, a reporter and the wolf.

Mrs. Ottaviano's First Graders staged their trial of the Wolf on Wednesday. The jury from Mrs. Jenkins' class found the Wolf guilty while the jury from Mrs. Parham's class found the Wolf not guilty. First Grader Bo Fiser played Alexander T. Wolf for Mr. Bishop's class and Ava Brownlie played Alexandra T. Wolf from Mrs. Ottaviano's class.

Lower School Science Fair

About 100 students exhibited science projects at the Lower School Science Fair last Friday in Siler Hallway. Students in Grades 3-5 presented their projects after working on them for about 7-8 weeks. The students picked any topic they would like to explore, conducted preliminary research and then designed and conducted their own experiment. They then recorded and interpreted the results in terms of how it related to their hypothesis. The underlying goal of the Lower School science fair is the goal of teaching students the scientific method. Eighth Graders served as judges for the fair.

Kindergarten Experiments with Magnets

Students in Mrs. Saliba's and Mrs. Noland's Kindergarten classes got a special treat during centers Thursday. Maggie Whitt, mother of Kindergartener Greta Whitt, came to ESK to share a special magnet science experiment with the students. They have been learning about the aspects of magnets and what make them special. Today, students used four different types of magnets (horseshoe, bar, wand, circle) and tested which of the magnets was the strongest. Each student made a hypothesis and used paper clips to test each magnet and determine their results.

Tennessee Heritage Day

Six Eighth Grade students were chosen by their peers to participate in The King's Academy's Tennessee Heritage Day last week. Teddy Colocotronis, Sean O'Tool, Alex Daley, Eli Fox, Morgan Morton-Killeffer, Caroline Carr and Bevin Coburn presented their Hunt for History characters to the students at King's. The entire Eighth Grade will present their Hunt for History characters on Sunday, April 14 from 2-4 p.m. at Old Gray Cemetery!!

Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair

A large group of ESK students will be exhibiting at the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair, beginning at 3 p.m. at Thompson Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. The students include Calder Woodward, Steven Busby, Crosse Smith, Andrew Natter, John Morrow, Lauren Reed, Jamie Hickling, Frances James, Grace Taylor, Abigail Underwood, John Mullaney and Miela Hurst.

 

Green Screen

Check out this video from Seventh Grade students Holly Batey, Casey Majors and Lauren Reed. The students have been working on scripting, filming and editing newscasts about different topics. The final version of each newscast incorporated the use of a green screen.

"On My Own"

Eighth Grade students at ESK participated in a special financial literacy curriculum Wednesday afternoon through UT Extension campus and Marci Hethmon, mother of ESK seventh grader, Elizabeth Hethmon. Prior to the event, each student filled out a personality assessment which then determined the scenario each was given.Through a two-hour interactive financial simulation, the students rotated through several activity centers that provided experience in setting budgets, prioritizing purchases, and evaluating needs and wants. A special thanks to the parents and volunteers who helped run the simulation.

The next meeting of the Parents' Association will be Wednesday, April 3 at 8:15 a.m. at Panera in Turkey Creek. Please note the location change and we hope to see you there!

Soccer
Coaches: Alice Smith, Mattie Hodge

 

Both ESK soccer teams opened their seasons last Thursday afternoon on the road against St. John Neumann. The JV team took the field first in an exciting matchup. The Saints jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first half before St. John Neumann rallied to knot the final score at 4-4. Sixth Grader Hutch Peter scored two goals while classmates Miela Hurst and Natalie Musharbash added single goals.

The Varsity team also played a tough game against St. John Neumann, falling by the final score of 3-1. Eighth Grader Ellie Lai scored the lone goal for the Saints on a penalty kick after she was tripped in the box.

 

Eighth Grader Ellie Lai was responsible for the only goal in the Varsity team's 4-1 loss to St. John Neumann.  

 

Both teams have practiced hard this week and will use Spring Break to rest up for the remainder of the season. Regular practice is scheduled for April 2 and 3.

Golf

The ESK Golf Team will begin practice on Tuesday, April 2nd at 3:45 p.m. at Fairway and Greens.  Carpools are being formed to transport students there after school.  Parents should pick-up students at 5 p.m. at Fairway and Greens.
