Holiday Eating...Merriment in Moderation!



The holiday season is a time of family, festivities and a lot of food. The average American gains 1-5 pounds over the holiday season. A big concern for the endurance athlete is how to join in all the holiday fun without putting on excess pounds that will affect training. Below are five helpful tips that allow for holiday cheer without the weight gain fear.


1. Holidays begin with breakfast.   A non-sugar based carbohydrate source like oatmeal made with antioxidant rich fruit and heart healthy nuts and a large glass of fat-free milk will help get the metabolism started every day!

The Importance of the Long Run


Regardless of which race you are preparing for, your training schedule will revolve around a weekly long run. All of the runs on the schedule are important but the weekly long run is where you will test your limits to build the fitness and the confidence you need to cover the distance on race day. It is also where you will learn the most about yourself. As you complete this run week after week, you will learn the answers to important questions such as, "What pace should I run during the race?", "How much fluid do I need to stay hydrated?" and "How many calories do I need per hour to maintain my energy?" So look at the long run as a weekly race rehearsal that gets a little longer each week.
