Gena Suarez

Hey Mama,

If you're looking for creative ways to teach math and science, check out these articles from our magazine:

Hands-On Math Activities - Marcia Washburn

Top Ten Tips for Teaching Math - Lori Lynn Lydell

How Should Science be Taught - Peter Miller

Kitchen Lab: Edible Experiments and Other Mad Scientist Recipes - Tamara Christine Van Hooser

Now Mama, I heard something about you that is pretty incredible.

You have gone through storm after storm. Trial after trial. Pain after pain.

But in the midst of it, you continue to bless others. You not only do the "bare minimum" with your kids (keeping them healthy, secure, educated, fed, and happy) but you do so much more, in spite of the inward tears and soulful mourning. You have heart talks with them. You make sure that each one feels touched in some way by you, noticed, encouraged. Mama's baby (even the older ones).

Sometimes you think, "I'm a phony. Here I smile at my kids and act like all is well, when it's really the opposite." Mama, you're no phony. You're wise. We are called to find joy even amidst the trials. We are called to walk in a manner worthy of the Gospel, of our Lord Jesus. Our kids' lives and our relationships with them must go on even if we are falling apart on the inside. We can set aside the pain, lock it away for a while and just focus on the ones who need us. This is part of the trial. This is the test you are PASSING, Mama.

Just know this is not forever. The quiet tears will subside. The rush of hurt will be no more. The dull, monotonous heartache will turn to rejoicing. You will see His hand just like you always have. Get through this time, because it IS just a season; there is a purpose, and no matter what happens, He is on the throne. He reigns! And He will deliver you. Sin cannot prevail; God will not be mocked. God wins. You win.

Mama, you amazing Mama, you. And I know you are aware of Who it really is. You don't even take this as a credit to yourself because you know the Author of your very faith, the Maker of your very breath. He makes that heart beat inside you, and He will make it smile, again, too. The Master of your heart LOVES your heart. To God be all the glory. May we be like Him. Keep walking, Mama. Joy comes in the morning.

The Familyman

OK, you know me by now. I have as many math and science skills as I have organizational skills. I can add, subtract, and construct a dominant/recessive gene chart of the fruit fly (that has come in handy). Soooo ... it's asking a lot from me to discuss creative ways to teach math and science.

To some, math is drudgery; to others it's fascinating, but either way math is essential in life, ie. making spending choices; working with a household budget, paying bills, buying groceries; getting a paycheck, paying taxes; cooking in the kitchen or building something in the shop. We won't all necessarily work higher math equations, but we will spend most of our lives adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.

Let's move on to science. That's a different beast. The world around us is all about science. Any children given the freedom from spending their days in a schoolroom can learn plenty. Here's a sample: during a typical day at our house the kids might see our cat eat a squirrel, discover mold growing on leftovers in the fridge, examine bugs climbing on the screens, see a toad or snake in the grass, watch rain filling the puddles and creek near our house, find crawdads hiding under rocks, discover dust collecting on the TV screen, and endure fruit flies swarming our kitchen. That's science. In fact, my kids have an awesome science tutor - GOD!

Throw in an Apologia textbook to increase your trivia game knowledge and you've got science nailed.

There you go. Expert advice from a non-expert ... and you got it all for FREE!!

Be real,
Todd

"When curiosity is raised, learning occurs."

Ed Sobey, Ph.D., President, Northwest Invention Center

Let's eavesdrop on Dr. Sobey's Tinkers Club class . . .

"Can you pop a balloon with a magnet? If you have your owBalloon and Magnetn idea of how to do this, go for it. If not, get some stuff together and follow along. Let's build a machine that will pop balloons. Why? Because it's fun!"

I think I would have enjoyed learning science from Dr. Sobey! Math and science were never my favorite subjects growing up. They always seemed a little flat. That might not have been the case had I known three of our Schoolhouse Teachers.

Ed Sobey is in the business of inventing things, and his Tinkers Club gives your students the chance to do just that.

Jason Lindsey takes everyday items you most likely have around the house and turns them into eye-popping science experiments that cause many reluctant participants to get hooked on science.

In Pre-Algebra, Charlene Johnson answers the timeless question "Why do I have to learn this?" in every lesson. She shows kids not only the hows of Pre-Algebra, but the whys as well.

Raising Bearded Dragons: The Ultimate

Care Guide to Raising a Healthy Bearded Dragon

 From Raising Bearded Dragons

Raising Bearded Dragons
Raising Bearded Dragons: The Ultimate Care Guide to Raising a Healthy Bearded Dragon, is a complete care course for Beardie owners. This comprehensive course is an 11 module video series created by Abigail Kessler and Gabriel Valo, and is presented by Bay Guthrie. The course teaches you all of the do's and don'ts of raising a healthy Beardie. Also included are a Bearded Dragon Food list PDF, Care Sheet PDF and access to the Raising Bearded Dragons exclusive Facebook community. If you prefer to read through the course rather than watch the videos an E-Book version is included as well. You get all of this for just $27.00. And the course even comes with a money back guarantee. (. . . )

We adopted a Beardie from a friend and really had no clue what we were getting into. My initial thought was, "It's a lizard, how hard can it be"? Well boy was that an incorrect thought. Beardies are great pets, but they require lots of care and there is tons of misinformation out there. When we first got our Beardie, Spike, we checked out some books from the library and talked with a pet store employee. We thought we were prepared and ready to care for Spike. That was until Spike got sick. After a countless hours of research we discovered the problem! But had I watched these video months ago when we brought him home, I would have known what we were doing wrong and could have prevented the problems. Every mistake we were making was covered in the Raising Bearded Dragons videos. (. . . )
