Gena Suarez

Hey Mama,

Here are some articles from the magazine that will help you add hands-on learning to your homeschool:

"Hands-on Writing in Units is Unforgettable" - Jessica Hulcy

"Hands-on Learning Through 4-H" - Sonya Brouillette

"Learning that Lasts" - Hal and Melanie Young

Is there too much noise in your house? Remember, all this NOISE will some day be crickets chirping. We will long for the days these kids fell asleep in our arms, or rubbed their sweaty hot faces in our hair as they snuggled with us, or came bounding up to us when we walked through the door.

Bloom where you are planted. Right now the Lord has you here, for this season, right now. Love the "now." Because later you will long for the "used to be."

Did you know? Every class is INCLUDED for members! No limits!

Are you a hands-on planner? I am. While some people comfortably keep their To Do lists and commitments stored neatly in a compartment of their mind, I can't function that way. Just the act of writing down what I have to do relieves a tiny bit of the stress of needing to do it (until I look at the length of my list, but that's another matter!).

I use a combination of old-fashioned print and modern technology. I have lists and notepads beside my keyboard and spreadsheets open on the laptop in front of me. Maybe you are the same way. Maybe you like the convenience of storing information on your computer but also need the ability to write down notes or take your schedule with you offline.

The new digital Schoolhouse Planners are here!

Schoolhouse Planners

Type your information directly onto the calendar and save it to your computer or print the pages you need and take them with you anywhere. Either way, you'll have hundreds of pages of forms and templates to choose from.

From now through July 4th, you can purchase the digital Schoolhouse Planners for 50% off. But are you ready for even better news? All SchoolhouseTeachers.com members get all five digital planners FREE after one month of membership. (Did we mention there is a sale on to join, too?)

If you join SchoolhouseTeachers.com during our 19 Gifts sale, not only will you save money (regular price $12.95 a month), you will lock in your membership at this price for as long as you maintain your membership (see site for details). Plus, you'll receive all 5 digital planners FREE after your first month and you'll receive 19 special free gifts from our vendors. Hurry-the 19 Gifts sale offer expires July 21, 2014.

The Familyman

I should just put this baby on summer cruise control, because I'm not going to think about school for the next two months and neither should you.

Hands-on learning? Everyone knows hands-on learning is the best way to learn. High schools and colleges advertise and promote it ... and your children are doing it every day of SUMMER.

Just this morning, my two youngest boys Cal (8) and Jed (6) were outside early. In fact, when I came down for breakfast, Cal walked in through the front door dressed in shorts and wearing big heavy winter gloves. Instantly, my mind went on alert at the sight and I said, "What are you doing?"

"Dad, there are a ton of ants outside ... come and see."

There were a ton of ants swarming on our sidewalk, eating whatever ants eat, and my kids were learning! But I didn't spoil the moment by pointing out thoraxes and ant patterns, I just said, "Cool!" and left them to observe.

Mom, go and do the same. Let your kids do summer. Refuse to point out thoraxes, and then if you want ... count it as 60 days of your school year, because the real honest truth is: they will learn more by hands-on learning and exploration than they will staring into the pages of a book.

You can put that in the bank.

Be real ... and pick up some ant spray,

Todd

"Mr. Wizard's World" Volume 1 DVD

My children and I recently reviewed two DVDs, "The Best of Watch Mr. Wizard" Vol. 1, and "Mr. Wizard's World" Vol. 1. When I was offered this review, I jumped at it, for two reasons. First, I am currently recovering from surgery, and my boys and I could easily review this, we just had to watch the DVDs! But more importantly, I wanted it because I have a fond childhood memory of a Mr. Wizard book that I got from the library when I was young. I used instructions from it to make a beautiful crystal garden in a fish bowl using charcoal, food coloring, bluing, and I don't recall what else.

While we all enjoyed watching both of these DVDs, I preferred watching "The Best of Watch Mr. Wizard" Vol. 1. This DVD has four episodes from the original hit TV series of the 1950s and 1960s, which is more from MY childhood. The episodes are themed as follows:

#1 - Heat Transfer

#2 - Adhesives

#3 - Electricity

#4 - Animal Motion

My boys at first were not so sure they would enjoy taking time away from their electronic games to watch these DVDs with me (especially since "The Best of Watch Mr. Wizard" Vol. 1 has a running time of two hours, and "Mr. Wizard's World" Vol. 1 has a running time of 1 hour and 44 minutes), but lo and behold, they all four sat with rapt attention, commenting often about the things they were learning and found so interesting. They were disappointed when I told them they had to wait until the next day to watch the second DVD!

(Read the rest of the review!)

You can WIN these DVDs!

TO ENTER: Email Heather with your name, mailing address, and phone number for contact purposes, with the subject line, "Mr. Wizard" for a chance to win* the DVDs for your family!

"I look forward to THM every Wednesday. I really enjoy Deborah's articles. For some reason, it must be God, she always writes about what I am needing to hear. Her ability to put scripture and God in the middle of all her articles keeps me coming back. I recently have been enjoying the Youngs' [articles] because I have a young man (10) in my house. The encouragement of the Youngs is fabulous. I thank God for parents like them that pave the way for parents like myself and my husband."

"Thanks ever so much. I love the encouraging articles! I really loved the list of 25 all in one place. Nice to have this little bit of "free" encouragement in my mail. I don't have funds to subscribe or purchase frills and with also working more than half time I don't have time to search it out. May God bless you exceedingly."

"I absolutely love Todd's column. He always seems to put things in the proper perspective, and it keeps me from getting all stressed and anxious. Thanks Todd, and thanks TOS!!"
