Pitch Me a Story
Tell me a story...but if you're only using notes, how does that work? Journalists consider the "pitch" to be the way you sell your story to your editor. But in handbells, the pitch doesn't have words at all. In fact, the pitch IS the story. High or low, pitch is the main ingredient in music. And pitch is determined by... well, speed. So it's only fitting Velocity Handbell Ensemble's next concert is centered around something related to velocity. Heard a good tale lately? Let Velocity pitch you a story.

Message from the Chair - Michle Sharik

Now that Easter is past us, it's time for April Spring Rings! There are so many to choose from - looking at my calendar, I see events on every weekend. Wow! Some of them are even "prep events" for the Handbell Hop in Modesto this summer, which gives you a chance to work on the music in a massed setting *before* playing it for Michael and Kimberlee. So what are you waiting for? Click on the calendar icon and go sign up for a Spring Ring TODAY!
My Best,
Michle Sharik

I have another special feature this month, this time marking a milestone in Handbell Musicianship. Enjoy this reflection about Beth Mays' quest for a MM degree in handbell performance.
March 20, 2016 marked a milestone in my life. It was also a milestone for the world of handbell ringers. On that Sunday afternoon, I completed my second Masters Recital. My first recital the year before was in fulfillment of my conducting degree. However, this one was the final requirement for my Masters of Music in Performance: Handbells. Although others have done graduate work with bells, this is the first graduate degree to focus specifically on performance. It is also the first handbell degree offered by Azusa Pacific University.
In the spirit of my role as Historian, let me share a few memories. In spite of the brutal nature of the class, I loved graduate music history. The professor, Dr. Claire Fedoruk, is one of the finest teachers I have experienced. I had the privilege of being her
Graduate Assistant my final year at APU and am very grateful to her for all the teaching opportunities she gave me. I had a great time under the baton of Dr. Donovan Gray before he left us for a job in China. I have discovered that while I struggled endlessly with music arranging, I have a talent for orchestration (which initially I found totally overwhelming). I learned so much about score study and preparation from my conducting teacher Chris Russell. In the course of three years, I have grown so much as a musician and as a person. Studying my art at the graduate level meant that my life was intensely focused on bells and music for three years.
Now that this chapter of my life is coming to an end, I am starting to look forward to the opportunities that will present themselves. I want to teach in a university setting and this is the reason I pursued the Masters degrees. I believe very strongly that for our art form to grow, we need to be further established in academia. People need to see handbells are an instrument that can be studied at the same level as violin, voice, piano, or any other. This is how we continue to merge into the mainstream and achieve the validity we constantly strive for.
I am often asked, "You've just finished your degree, what are you going to do now?" While I would love to answer "I'm going to Disneyland!," the truth is that after a little rest, I still have a number of projects on my plate. I'm looking forward to Area 12 Board Meeting this weekend. I've got a tour with Timbr Ensemble in June. And of course, the Handbell Hop! I'll look forward to seeing you all there!
