Message from the Chair - Michle Sharik |

Hi there, Area 12!
It is with great pleasure that I announce not only our election results, but also some new additions to your Board of Directors. But before I do that, I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who returned their ballots. Voting is one of the most important things you can do and the high turnout we got this election was very encouraging. It shows that you, the members, care about the future of our organization and are involved in making our collective vision a reality. Hurray!!
* Tess Houston is our new Chair Elect, effective immediately. She has already been hard at work in her new position and I am looking forward to working closely with her over the next several years. * Scott Leggett will also be joining the Board this summer in the position of Los Angeles Metro Regional Coordinator. He brings some great experience to the table and is working closely with Pearl Marshall to ensure a smooth changeover. I am really looking forward to working with him. Welcome, Scott! * Kari Jacobs has agreed to be our new Southern California Regional Coordinator, effective immediately. I am thrilled at her appointment and hope you will greet her warmly at the SoCal Spring Ring on April 5! (Do me proud, SoCal!) Welcome, Kari! * Finally, KatRyn Howell will be our new Education Director effective immediately, taking over from Tess Houston. Kat has lots of experience in music education and is looking forward to working with the schools in our Bell & Chime Loan Program. Welcome, Kat! I recently attended The Guild's National Area Leadership Training where I not only learn what our guild can do for us, but what we can do for our guild. So, why does membership matter? There are so many things on both sides of this equation, but indulge me as I share with you what your guild is doing for you! Hopefully you will, like I have, feel more inspired to work at the grassroots level in partnership with this super organization!
It takes PEOPLE to make all this happen. Dreamers and Do-ers, from home and on site, short-term and long-term, with hands or with resources, and yes, even a clean-up crew! Get involved! To help in your region, contact your regional coordinator. To help in Area 12, contact one of our board members, and to help in our national organization, send an email to webmaster@handbellmusicians.org,
"because, together, we can do what none of us can do alone."

Dear Handbell Musicians,
When you hear the words "Shake, Rattle, and Ring" what probably comes to mind is the Area 12 Ringers Conference in San Luis Obispo in June. Yes, you would be right that there will be plenty of drums beating, shakers and rattles playing, sticks clicking and lots of ringing. There might even be some juggling! That will be a great event for you teens and adults and I hope you have registered.
But what about those little darlings or youngsters who are too young to go to "Shake, Rattle, and Ring"? Solution: have them take part in the Palm Sunday Processional at a church near you. The youngsters can march or dance their way down the aisle with shakers, rattles, sticks, drums, bells, and even palm branches. They will be so excited and have so much fun that they in turn will convince their parents to attend the Area 12 conference!
Please check the Area 12 calendar for workshops and concerts near you. And remember to submit your event to me so it can be posted on the website calendar. Happy spring ringing!
Rincerely,
NorCal Regional Coordinator

April Greetings,
LAMetro Ringers and Directors!
Spring Ring Report
Well, Saturday's Spring Ring was a smashing success! We had over 75 ringers under the skilled direction of Dr. Donavon Gray of Azusa Pacific University. We enjoyed warm fellowship as we rehearsed and performed several of the pieces selected for this year's Area 12 Conference. Our teachers and ringers playing percussion instruments added great excitement to all of our music! Many thanks to Dr. Donavon Gray, Beth Mays, the APU staff, and to all our volunteers, teachers, directors, and RINGERS who made this wonderful event possible!

CenCal - Lori Smith, Regional Coordinator

Hi Cencal Ringers,
I'm borrowing from an old joke:
So, Maracas, Claves, and Timpani all meet up at a bar.
The name of the bar? Bar Seven-Zero. And Maracas say: "Csh, csh, csh, Csh, csh, csh, Csh, csh" Claves answered with: " ___, Tik, Tik, ___" Timpani gave the conversation a little more thought: " ___, ___, ___, Booooom................."
Ok, I'm not very good at telling jokes. But, I'm looking at measure 70 of the full score for Jamaican Rumba, and I wanted you to hear what fun the percussion section is enjoying. Some of you will play, and all of you can hear, this piece when you attend the Area 12 Conference this June in San Luis Obispo.
I finally got the chance to play a Djembe! Kathy brought them to the A12 Board meeting a few weeks ago, and we enjoyed playing several creative rhythms in a drum circle. It was so much fun, I had a hard time putting it down when our break was over. These same djembes will be used in some of the classes and concert at SLO.
You are planning on being there, right? Come and hear more of the "conversation" between all the percussion instruments. I'll be there at the registration desk, assisting our Registrar, Kathy Arnold.
See you there!
