Spring may not have sprung just yet, but there has been a lot of seed planting for great events which will bloom later this spring! Check it all out below!
Message from the Chair - Michèle Sharik

Hi there, Area 12!

Now that our handbell music programs are back in full swing for 2014, it's time to look forward to Spring Ring season! There are a number of SRs coming up all across our Area in the next couple of months. I hope you will encourage your groups to attend these wonderful events, not only because they're an excellent chance to work with amazing clinicians and learn new things, but also for the fun and fellowship we share with other ringers each year at these events.

Speaking of events, we have more information for you regarding the 2014 Ringers Conference in San Luis Obispo, so please go check it all out on the Area 12 website.

In other news, members should receive their ballots this week for the special election for Chair Elect -- I got mine on January 27th. Please take the time to read the biographical information of both candidates and make a considered choice. Both candidates are excellent, so it's a hard decision. Remember that the future of Area 12 is in YOUR hands, so please remember to return your ballots right away - they must be postmarked by February 28th in order to be counted!

That's all from me right now. Have a wonderful February!

My best,

Michèle Sharik

Hey, folks! It's almost time to Shake, Rattle & Ring! Registration will open in early February, and you'll have until mid-March to get that glorious early bird rate! We'll let you know when registration is open so you can be the first to sign up! Come solo or bring your whole group! We have several performing opportunities; you could be chosen to play a mini-concert in front of all of Area 12!

In addition to our fabulous conductors, Michele Sharik, Jason Wells, and Kevin McChesney, and our innovative Percussion Tracks where you will learn to play hand drums, mallets, and sticks like a pro, we are offering many tracks you probably won't see anywhere else, like Intro to Quartet Ringing, Jason Tiller's Listening/Recording Lab, the world premiere of Michele Sharik's Body Bellistic, Six Ways to Four in Hand, and of course, the only Handbell Theatre track available in 2014!

Area 12 is world renowned for innovation in event planning, so don't be left out while we make history again! Get ready to sign up in February!

Here is your chance to Shake, Rattle and Ring
for all of Area 12 to see!

There will be four performance opportunities for handbell groups or soloists! Check the Area 12 website for complete info on our easy application process.

Scholarships Offered

Every two years Area 12 offers scholarships to two Area 12 members to assist them with the cost of attending the Area 12 conference. The Jim Scott Memorial Scholarship assists one ringer and one director who demonstrate financial need by covering their registration, hotel room (half the double occupancy rate), and any meals that are included in the registration packet.

Applications are being accepted now through April 15th, so don't delay! If you or someone you know is interested, send in your application today.

Election News

It's Time to Vote...Twice!

Handbell Musicians of America members are encouraged to participate in two elections currently ongoing - one at the local Area 12 level and one at the National level.

If you are an Area 12 member, it's likely you have already received a postcard ballot in the mail for a special election for Area 12 chair-elect. Bios of the two candidates - Scott Leggett of Glendale, California and Tessique Houston of Concord, California - were mailed to the membership last week, and the information can also be found on the Area 12 website.

Additionally, candidates for two National at-large board positions and the position of president-elect were announced in the latest edition of the Overtones. New to the National election process this time around is a streamlined online voting system. While no ballot was mailed, members are encouraged to go the National web site to read the biographies and view personalized videos made by the candidates (note that bios are also printed in the Overtones). National voting does not begin until March 1st, but members can preview instructions on using the online voting system. For information about the National elections process, contact the Handbell Musicians of America National office (1-800-878-5459).

And if you have questions about Area 12's elections, or if you are interested in serving on the Area 12 board in the future (we are seeking nominations for Secretary and Treasurer NOW), please contact the Area 12 past chair.

last call

Please note the deadlines! Area 12 ballots must be postmarked by February 28, 2014. And the VOTE NOW button on the National web site will remain up only until 7 p.m. EST on March 31, 2014.

The future of handbells is literally in your hands,

so please don't forget to VOTE...twice!

Bay Area ringers have an amazing opportunity coming up with our Intense Ring and Spring Ring this May 2 and 3. Not only are we hosting the amazing conductor, Fred Gramann, all the way from Paris, but there are many opportunities to participate in a variety of activities we have not had in the past. In addition to all the wonderful classes this event traditionally boasts, ringers will have a chance to learn bell tree finesse from the bell tree master herself, Barbara Brocker. And for those who find four-in-hand or six-in-hand boring, you can try your (hopefully rather large) hand at learning eight-in-hand from solo artist Danny Lyons. And there will be performances, performances, performances galore throughout the day. It's all in thanks and celebration of Dave Ruder, as he retires this year after 24 years of organizing this event!

So head on over to the Bay Area web page and register - we are going to have a blast and we hope to see you there!

Dear Handbell Musicians,

February is here and maybe you are wondering what ringers, bells, and Valentine's Day all have in common?  Answer: Celebrating Valentine's Day through bell ringing! You have probably heard of singing Valentines, mostly done by barbershop quartets who will go out into the community and sing for couples and then present them with a red rose.

You may not have heard about ringing Valentines - where small bell ensembles go out into the community and ring (or ring and sing) a few love songs and then perhaps present the happy couple with a red rose or pink carnation. Sometimes there is a fee involved. Sometimes you just do it for free. The ringing Valentine is a cool way to spread the art of handbell ringing, make a few couples very happy, and perhaps earn a little money on the side. So, check your closet for red attire, grab a few ringers, find some couples needing some special attention on Valentine's Day, stop by the florist for some red roses or pink carnations, and make someone happy, including yourself!

As always, if you have a workshop, concert, or other handbell event you would like posted on the calendar for Northern California, please contact me. As your Northern California Regional Coordinator, I am here to serve you.  Happy Valentine's Day!!

Ringcerely!

Nancy Schmitt

Hello CenCal Folks,

How is your New Year starting out?  What fun music do you have in your folders?  Looking through one of my folders, I'm finding "In the Hall of the Mountain King" (think Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt), "Time to Say Goodby" (think Andrea Bocelli), and "Moonlight Serenade" (think Glenn Miller). I like the variety of styles.

Also in my folder is, "Viva la Vida" (think Coldplay). This presents me with a new challenge. The D5/E5 position seems to have a split personality. The left hand is predominantly malleting with the bass chord rhythms, while the right hand is partnering with the melody or counter-melody. Pat-your-head-and-rub-your-tummy! This one will require some concentration, but I think I'll have it figured out by the time our concerts are upon us!

I hope I'll see you in San Luis Obispo for Shake, Rattle, and Ring, June 19-22!
