There are plenty of gift items at the Winter DCFM at Monona Terrace. --Photos by Natalie Porter
Food, Fun, and Fantastic Gifts at the DCFM!
The winter Dane County Farmers' Market (DCFM) at Monona Terrace continues each Saturday through December 21. After taking a break on December 28, it continues next January 4 at the Madison Senior Center, at 330 West Mifflin St.
These next three markets at Monona Terrace offer gift items along with a huge variety of ingredients. At Monona Terrace you'll find ornaments, baskets, table decorations, and much more. All are created with the majority of the content that is raised or produced by the vendor.
While fine soaps and beeswax candles continue to be available at the Senior Center market beginning in January, for December you'll also find gift boxed items and those produced only for the season.
At the Monona Terrace market you can buy DCFM gift certificates at the information booth. The certificates are valued at $5.00 each, are good at any DCFM market, never expire, and are accepted by any vendor. Also available for sale are empty gift boxes ready for you to fill with products from the DCFM.
Along with your shopping list, make out your gift list when you visit the market this Saturday.
See you at market!Bill Lubing

This recipe is a popular soup served at the Summer Kitchen Restaurant near Ephraim, WI. It is thick and delicious. I've modified it somewhat by adding the thyme and pepper for even more flavor. It freezes very well.
Ingredients
6 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup flour 1 cup onion, diced 1 cup carrot, diced 2 tablespoons butter 2 quarts chicken broth (Check with Jordandal Farms) 1/4 pound Polish sausage, diced (Check with your favorite DCFM vendor for other varieties.) 1 cup potato, raw, peeled and diced 1 head chopped cabbage (about 1 pound) 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Salt and pepper
Directions
- Make a white roux with 6 tablespoons of butter and 1/2 cup flour by melting the butter in a medium skillet, stirring in the flour and simmering 3- 5 minutes while stirring constantly.
- Avoid browning.
- Set aside.
- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a stock pot, or Dutch oven.
- Add diced onions and carrots.
- Saute until tender.
- Add chicken broth, diced sausage, diced potatoes, and chopped cabbage to the pot.
- Stir and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Add white roux, thyme, salt and pepper to the pot.
- Stir until smooth.
- Simmer for 20 minutes.

This Week's Music
Playing from 8:00-10:00
Leaves of Green is a recently formed duo of singer/songwriter Lisa Johnson guitar and performer Ben Doran on hammered dulcimer. Original tunes and traditional Irish/American tunes are the fare, as well as some seasonal/Holiday tunes from around the world. Playing from 10:00-12:00The Sills: Like all bands, this band is the result of previous bands. This one attempts to make a little less noise and a bit more melody. For some that means the freedom to play what they want and not what is expected. Blair Clark and Leah Brooke Conway do the front work; Blair does the lion's share of writing and all have a lot to say about the arrangements. The two share the vocals, putting together a sound at times weaving two into one but still keeping themselves intact. Chris Moore is the bridge to a variety of styles evident in the Sills' body of work; his diversity of instrumentation full of genre-bending textures, makes gypsy, country, jazz, punk, blues, and alternative voices available to Blair's introverted lyrics. David Ross and Jim McKiernan create a rhythm section that channels some big band energy and holds the band together.
