Augment Your Thanksgiving Leftovers with Fresh Produce, Bakery, Cheese, and More from the DCFM!
Everyone at the Dane County Farmers' Market (DCFM) wishes you a happy and safe Thanksgiving. We hope you enjoy a wonderful meal using ingredients from the market.
There's no better way to enjoy those Thanksgiving leftovers than with fresh produce, bakery, cheese, and more from this Saturday's DCFM. Fresh bread for those turkey sandwiches, layered with tomatoes, greens, and cheese from the market promise to be a hit with your family. Salad fixings, using freshly picked greens are perfect for those light weekend meals.
If the turkey is all gone, don't forget the fine meats available from DCFM vendors. Beef, bison, chicken, emu, pork, smoked salmon and fresh and smoked rainbow trout make preparing flavorful meals an easy affair.
If you're looking for a less frenetic holiday shopping environment, plan to spend part of your time at this Saturday's market devoted to finding those perfect holiday decorations, gifts, and farmstead keepsakes. These items are sold for just a few weeks of the year by DCFM vendors. The Monona market offers DCFM vendors an opportunity to sell crafts, which they make from materials primarily produced by the seller.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving. Then plan to visit the DCFM this Saturday. Remember, there is adjacent parking and an ATM machine located in Monona Terrace. For directions to the market or any other information, ask at the Monona Terrace information table, on the main level. For questions about the market, visit the info booth, just inside the main entrance.
See you at market!Bill Lubing

Carrot and Ginger Soup
Carrot and Ginger Soup. --Photo by May I Have That Recipe
by Tessa Morales
My 2 year old loved this soup. Can be frozen. Great way to go through some carrots. Light meal for a summer day and hot and warming for a cold day.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 2 tablespoons grated peeled fresh gingerroot
- 1 1/2 pounds carrots, peeled (optional) and thinly sliced
- 6 cups chicken stock or 6 cups vegetable stock
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
- In 4-quart saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
- Add onions and saut until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add gingerroot and cook 2 minutes longer.
- Add carrots and stock to onions; heat to boiling over high heat.
- Reduce heat to low, cover and cook carrots until tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Alternately, you can cook the carrots first, then add to stock- no need to thinly slice) Use hand blender to blend carrot mixture, in batches, until smooth.
- Salt and pepper to taste.
- Heat soup over low heat until hot.
- Ladle into bowls and serve.
- Use the vegetable stock for vegetarians.

Correction
In step four of last week's recipe it calls for using sour cream. Unfortunately the quantity required was omitted from the ingredient list. The correct amount is 2/3 of a cup of sour cream.
We regret the omission.

In Addition ...

This Week's Music
Playing from 8:00-10:00
Yatong Zhang, is a UW international student who plays the erhu a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, and the Hulusi. The hulusi is a free reed wind instrument. The Hulusi, held vertically, has three bamboo pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest.
Both traditional Chinese instruments have been used in Western music, though this may be a first for most market goers to hear these instruments played by an accomplished player.
Playing from 10:00-NoonMadison outfit Boo Bradley grounds its acoustic blues in Scott Kiker's gritty slide-guitar work and Brad Selz's washboard and other makeshift junk-percussion. Unlike a lot of upstart young roots-rock bands relieving the nation's thrift stores of old waistcoats, Boo also has the genuine wear and tear of traveling and street busking in its music. During the warmer months, the group's performances are a favorite on State Street and at the Dane County Farmers' Market. All that mileage isn't necessarily a burden, either: Thanks to Selz's busy rhythms and Kiker's feel for the acoustic guitar's sonic quirks, Boo Bradley is as warm and fun as blues acts come these days.
Eat well by eating local.
