We're Expecting Cranberries
The plan is that this will be the first market of the season for Nodji and Jim VanWychen, of Wetherby Cranberry Company. They come from Warrens, Wisconsin, which is in the heart of cranberry country. Look for them on North Pinckney St.
Turkeys ... Really?! It's not too early to order your Thanksgiving turkey, lamb or other holiday ingredients from your favorite Dane County Farmers' Market (DCFM) producer. Most vendors require you to pre-order your Thanksgiving turkey, especially if you are ordering a fresh and/or specific sized bird.
October is American Cheese MonthTake advantage of the huge selection of quality cheeses available at the DCFM during October Cheese Month. Whether your preference is cow, sheep, goat milk or a combination thereof, DCFM cheese makers offer national and internationally recognized cheeses. Got a question? Don't hesitate to ask the cheese maker. Remember, the producer is the seller at the DCFM.
See you at market!Bill Lubing

Pureed Winter Squash; Simple and Delicious: Microwave Lemon Garlic Broccoli
Pureed winter squash. --Photo by Rita~
by Rita~ This process is so very easy. No peeling! Squash is great for pureeing, roasting, and baking. Once cooked and pureed, it can be used in soups, main dishes, vegetable side dishes, even breads, muffins, custards and pies. The skin has many nutrients so go ahead and use it. Or peel and discard. But you will never know it's in the puree. Dress any cooked winter squash with butter and herbs, a cream sauce, cheese sauce, maple syrup, candied ginger, spices and or nuts. IngredientsWinter squash, as many as you'd like. Use butternut, acorn, pumpkin or any other hard winter squash available at the DCFM. Directions- Preheat oven to 350.
- Place squash on cookie sheet pan and bake for 60 minutes until tender and caramelized.
- Remove from oven and let cool to handle.
- Slice in half and remove seeds. (Discard seeds or rinse, towel dry and make my Roasted Pumpkin Seeds With a Kick from Kim! It does work!).
- Puree in a blender with a pinch of salt until smooth.
- Cool and place 2 cups in freezer bags. Freeze until ready to use in your favorite pie, soup, bread or sauce!
Simple and Delicious: Microwave Lemon Garlic Broccoli
Microwave Lemon Garlic Broccoli. --Photo by TeresaS
by Mama's Kitchen Right now there is an outstanding supply of quality broccoli at the DCFM. You can also use cauliflower or Romanesco. Try sunflower oil from the market in place of olive oil. Ingredients- 2 heads fresh broccoli, cleaned and cut into florets
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons sunflower oil from the market (or olive oil)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice, bottled is fine
- 2 garlic cloves from the market, minced (Can also use 1 teaspoon garlic powder.)
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/4 to 1 teaspoon salt, adjust to your liking or omit
Directions- Microwave broccoli and water in covered bowl on high for 6 minutes or until tender.
- While it is cooking mix the rest of the ingredients together.
- Drain cooked broccoli.
- Pour lemon garlic mixture over broccoli and mix to coat.
- If using fresh garlic cover the dish and let sit for about 2 minutes to allow heat from broccoli to "cook" and remove the raw taste from the garlic.
- If you're using powdered garlic then it's ready to serve.
