Beans and Grapes

We received an email from Lynn Bednarek from Stenrud Greenhouse (North Pinckney St.) She notes that: "We have several varieties of beans: Haricot vert, Romano, soy beans (or edamame), and three kinds of shell beans, scarlet runner, cannellini, and cranberry.

Muffy Barrett from Bluestem Farm (North Carroll St.) emailed the photo on the right, which let us know that in addition to their broad selection of native Wisconsin plants, "We had a few last weekend and expect more this Saturday: Our seedless grapes are ripe! Yes, it is possible to grow seedless grapes in Wisconsin."

We expect to see concord and other grape varieties if not this Saturday then very soon.

A Rainbow of
Carrot Colors
The availability and variety of carrots is excellent this time of year. At the Dane County Farmers' Market (DCFM) the choice is not simply orange. Purple, white, red, and yellow; there are many varieties at the market. Interestingly, the World Carrot Museum reports that orange carrots are a relative newcomer.

Little Change at DCFM for
Next Week's Taste of Madison
This time of year Market Manager Larry Johnson always receives many calls and emails asking about the effect of the Taste of Madison on the market. Taste of Madison takes place next week, beginning on August 31.

Since Taste doesn't begin until 2:00 pm, after the market closes, there are only two minor changes.

Because of set up, vehicular traffic on the square is restricted during market hours.
To accommodate Taste, the market closes at 1:00 pm rather than its usual 2:00 pm.

Many people bring a cooler to put in their back seats for their market purchases and stick around for Taste. So next week plan to pack the cooler, bring a few extra bags, and spend a few hours enjoying the DCFM and Taste.

See you at market!

Ingredients
2 cups honeydew melon, diced
2 cups cantaloupe, diced
3 tablespoons sugar, divided
2 teaspoons lime zest, freshly grated
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons mint leaves, fresh, slivered
4 pieces mint leaves, for garnish

Directions
  1. In a medium bowl combine honeydew, cantaloupe, 2 tablespoons of sugar, lime zest and juice, and slivered mint. Refrigerate 15 minutes, tossing occasionally, until sugar dissolves and mixture is well chilled.
  2. When ready to serve, spread remaining tablespoon of sugar onto a flat plate. Pour a little water into a shallow bowl and dip rim of each of 4 wine or martini glasses into water; press wet rims into sugar to coat edge of each glass. Spoon 1 cup of fruit mixture into each glass; garnish with mint sprigs.

Yields 1 cup per serving.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are needed to staff the Information Booth, located at the intersection of West Mifflin, N. Carroll and State streets. It's easy, fun, and you get to meet many interesting people.

If you'd like to find out more about this fun way to get involved with the Dane County Farmers' Market, drop an email to dcfminfobooth@gmail.com.

The shifts are short. The people are fun. And it's a great way to learn more about the Dane County Farmers' Market.

EBT Services
The DCFM works with the  Community Action Coalition to operate the EBT services. Volunteers are needed to staff the table. This is an important service that hundreds of people depend upon so that they can buy their fresh, local, groceries from the DCFM. If you would like to help out or if you'd like more information on how you can use this program, contact Lexa Dundore at lexad@cacscw.org or call (608) 246-4730, ext. 208.

...FRESH!

The Dane County Farmes' Market offers the largest selection of the freshest ingredients in the region, if not the country. As a "producer only" market, you can be assured that the one who produced it is the one who is selling it.

Enjoy shopping at the market, knowing that the DCFM rules and producer inspection program means you're buying the very best from producers who care.

 Eat well by eating local.
