DCFM Gift Boxes Available for the Holidays The Dane County Farmers' Market (DCFM) offers gift boxes for $3.00. Available with red, green or a combination of crinkle, these boxes are ready to present your gifts from the DCFM for the holiday season. They're available at the DCFM info table, near the market entrance at Monona Terrace.
DCFM Gift Certificates Make Great Gifts! Available at the info booth are DCFM gift certificates. Purchase as many as you want in $5.00 increments. They can be used at any DCFM Saturday, Wednesday, or winter market, and at the "Taste of the Market" breakfast.
Many parents find that DCFM gift certificates make great gifts for their children attending one of the colleges or universities in the Madison area. The certificates provide a great incentive for these young adults to learn about purchasing and preparing fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It's very helpful that what they're buying is sold by the folks who produce it, and who are willing to provide useful meal prep advice.
In a Volunteering Spirit? When the market moves to the Madison Senior Center on Saturday, June 5, the "Taste of the Market" breakfast begins! If you've got a couple of hours to spare on one or many Saturday mornings, you should consider volunteering for the market. Help prepare, serve, clean up, and perform other tasks that are vital to the smooth running of the breakfast. Volunteers are provided a free breakfast for their help. She has just introduced some great additions to her offering of catnip toys. Filled with wild gathered catnip, when Jae is not rolling out the dough she's busy sewing these popular cat playthings. Your cat will love them ... a lot.

 Just Say 'Cheese' for the Holidays!
And enjoy the terrific variety available from award winning cheese makers at the Dane County Farmers' Market.
 Those of us who shop the DCFM are fortunate to have a wealth of superb cheese makers to buy from. No matter your preference, be it cow, goat, or sheep milk (or a combination thereof) there is an award winning cheese maker ready to recommend the perfect cheese for your holiday menu planning.
The following list includes those cheese makers whom we're likely to see at this year's Early Winter (Monona Terrace) Dane County Farmers' Market. This list does not include all DCFM cheese makers. Not all of these cheese makers will participate in all of the remaining markets. Enough will be at each market to give you an excellent selection of cheese.

Recipes: Bacon Parmesan Brussels Sprouts; Hickory Hill Farm Sorghum Cookie Mix

Here is a melding of three strong DCFM ingredients, bacon, Parmesan cheese, and Brussels sprouts. This combo adds depth and character to any holiday meal. There are a number of cheeses from the DCFM that would work great if your preference is not Parmesan. A number of meat producers sell bacon. Brussels sprouts are available from several vendors as well. If you're unsure how to prepare the sprouts, check our One Minute Recipe Tip, Working with Brussels Sprouts.

Bacon Parmesan Brussels Sprouts
Ingredients
- 25 -30 fresh Brussels sprouts
- 8 slices of crisp cooked crumbled bacon
- 5 tablespoons sour cream
- 5 tablespoons fresh grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 clove fresh minced garlic
- Fresh ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh grated Parmesan cheese (extra)
Directions- Cut ends off Brussels Sprouts and remove yellow or spotted leaves.
- Score an"X" on the bottom of each sprout to allow the bitterness to escape.
- Steam or boil sprouts until tender.
- Heat the next 5 ingredients over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is hot.
- Combine all in casserole dish and toss to coat.
- Grate fresh ground black pepper over top, and sprinkle with extra cheese and serve.
Adapted from www.food.com Sorghum Cookie Mix from Hickory Hill Farm Hickory Hill Sorghum cookie mix with sorghum. --Photo by Bill Lubing This past summer Hickory Hill Farm introduced a variety of flours and grains that are grown and harvested on the farm and processed by Lonesome Stone Milling, in Lone Rock, WI. Gretchen and Richard at Hickory Hill have recently introduced a sorghum cookie mix. Just add butter or shortening, an egg, and sorghum. The farm sells sorghum that is grown and processed on the farm. Other producers sell it as well, though none that we're aware of that vend at the winter market. We tried a batch of the cookies from the mix using Hickory Hill Sorghum. They turned out fantastic. The one suggestion we'd make is to set your bake time to 18 minutes and watch them closely after that. Maybe we cut them a little thin, but coming from our oven the 25 to 30 minute bake time recommended on the bag would have rendered the cookies a little more brown than we prefer. We gave them around 20 minutes and they were perfect. If sorghum is not already one of the sweeteners in your kitchen tool kit, make it so. Whether your topping your ice cream, making cookies, or using it as a base for your baked beans, this is a terrific ingredient! Ingredients- One bag Hickory Hill Sorghum Cookie Mix
- 1/4 cup sorghum
- 1/2 cup butter or shortening
- 1 egg
Directions- Blend butter, egg, and sorghum until smooth.
- Add cookie mix and blend until incorporated (approximately 1 minute).
- Place dough on waxed paper and roll into log shape.
- Chill dough in refrigerator from 4 to 6 hours.
- When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Slice dough into 3/8 inch slabs, place on cookie sheet and bake until lightly browned (We baked 20 minutes).

This Saturday's Music From A Briarpicker This Saturday Paul Kienitz, usually part of the mandolin/violin duet The BriarPickers (thebriarpickers.com), will be performing traditional Appalachian style folk melodies with a classical string ensemble approach...dubbed "rustic chamber music" on solo fiddle. Many of the tunes will be from their newly released CD 'Mrs. Maxwell'. It will be the perfect complement for shopping and snacking!
