A note from Trudy

Summer is officially over but this week in Toronto has been wonderful - blue skies.

When I watch the news on TV whether it's on the breaking news channels or the regular programming, I'm always surprised with the spelling in the newsfeeds or the announcer's use of some words and grammar.

Don't they double check (and a spell checker isn't enough) or aren't they educated as we were on how to speak "correctly"? Or don't they even hear what they're saying?

Instead of just thinking about it I decided to write this newsletter about the difference between two words - a strategy and a tactic.

Read on and I'll tell you about these differences.

What is the difference between a strategy and a tactic?

When I co-owned the Apple computer dealership in 1980 my partner and I had no training in how to run a business and there weren't even courses to learn how to do it. After three moves we finally found a space where we could grow the business without moving again and decided to hire a management consultant to teach us how to plan -- and to "kick our butts" so we'd do it!

We worked with him for three years and he not only taught us how to plan but made sure we did.  He was the one who taught us that a strategy and a tactic are two different things.

What is a strategy and is it a part of your plan?

Planning to me is a process and I use the word plan as a verb not a noun so yes a strategy is part of planning. You often hear the term strategic planning. The Merriam Webster Online dictionary has a great definition of strategy - "a careful plan or method for achieving a particular goal usually over a long period of time -- and -- the skill of making or carrying out plans to achieve a goal."

Have I confused you? Let me explain.

  • plan - where you want to be including your strategy and tactics
  • strategy - what you believe  and why
  • tactics - tasks - how you'll get there

Think of chess. A player has an overall strategy and the moves are the tactics that fit with the strategy.

What are tactics?

They're the specific actions you take using your strategy to get the results you want in your plan.

I'll use sailing as an analogy. Let's say you start in Toronto and want to go over to Rochester. That's your plan. You use sailing to get there because you like being outdoors and love the physical challenge that it provides. That's your strategy.

sailing_man.jpg The wind changes from nothing to strong but you're ready for this. You use different sails and actions for each kind. These are your tactics.

A great quote I found when researching this topic is from Jeremiah Owyang "... strategy is done above the shoulders, tactics are done below the shoulders".

Keep learning, and until next time.

 Born to Read Book Review

How one company changed the world by reinventing business.
by Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures

Bruce's parents moved their family of nine from Trinidad to Calgary in the late 60s. It was very difficult for them in many ways - they experienced racism for the first time and moved from an island on the equator to a place with a harsh, frigid climate. But Bruce's mother and father persevered through sheer will and determination.

Now in 2014 he is a global leader in sustainability and social entrepreneurship. His company produces and operates adventure travel tours in more than 100 countries, on all continents for more than 100,000 people every year and he started this business in 1990 by maxing out some of his credit cards!

How did he do it? He tells us of his journey in his book.

His belief in giving back encompasses everything in his personal life and his business. Everyone they hire embody these three characteristics - they're creative, collaborative and communicative. He goes a step further by requiring them to show curiosity, courage, confidence and consistency in their beliefs. ALL of his staff are leaders.

He's been asked to speak about his new way to manage a business multiple times around the world, has presented at Apple and Google headquarters, and delivered addresses at TED talks ....

Buy this book and read it. It WILL change the way you do business and perhaps you too can change the world.
