Welcome to this month's issue! The Technology Advisor provides technology advice, strategy, tips and trends to help you manage and grow your business!
Join us for Data Security Training - June 25

We are approaching the summer season when you will spend time away from home, travelling with laptops, ipads, mobile devices and you want to know that you are safely using these devices, as well as protecting them from the intense heat of the summer and storing them in the right environment.  Whether you're travelling for business or pleasure, prepare to keep your technology safe.

Please join us for our next training webinar on Thursday, June 25 to get ready to go mobile.  Some of the topics we'll cover include:

  • How do you stay secure on public networks?

  • When is it smart to encrypt your portable data and when is it required by law?

  • What can you do if your laptop, tablet, or smart phone is lost or stolen?

  • How can you keep your mobile data costs from ballooning when you travel?

  • How can you securely access your office computer while you're away?

We'll also try to cover any questions you send us in advance, so please get your questions together so we can make this workshop as useful to you as possible.

The Massachusetts Data Security Law and other industry data security regulations such as HIPAA require on-going employee training.   Our training sessions are designed to help you meet your training goals, and keep your network and data safe.  The sessions are short and focused to help you fit them into your schedule.

Tech Headlines
Here are some of the Tech headlines we're tracking:

Password managers can be a smart way to increase your online security-until they get hacked - Password manager LastPass said that email addresses and encrypted master passwords were compromised in a breach. The company does not believe user accounts were accessed in the attack, but the company recommended that users change the master password they use to access their account.   Read more on Forbes

Fitbit makes a big run on its first day of trading - The age of "wearables" has arrived.  Fitbit, which trades under the NYSE ticker FIT, opened for trading shortly after 10 a.m. ET with an opening price of $30.40 a share. The stock was up 50% from its initial price of $20 during regular trading hours.  The stock has gone up again this week.  Read more at USAToday.

Your PC may be infected - the shady world of Antivirus telemarketing. Very interesting reading from an insider.  Beware if you get a phone call saying you have a security problem on your PC, or you get a pop-up telling you to call a number.  These telemarketers dupe consumers by pointing out irrelevant information and spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt.  .Read more on ComputerWorld

Password Day -  Fathers Day was just a few days ago, and we hope you had fun celebrating.  Did you know there was also a "Password Day" this month?  Read some great tips on the web site.   Read More on PasswordDay.org

"Patch Tuesday" Recap...

"Patch Tuesday" is the day each month that Microsoft releases their newest security updates, typically the second Tuesday of the month (June 9).  This month two were one "critical" and six "important" security patches affecting Microsoft Office and Windows. Remember that security patch updates are required for the MA Data Security Law and other industry security compliance standards.

For a full breakdown, check out the Microsoft Security Bulletin posted on line.  Note that in the days leading up to Patch Tuesday, there is always an advance notification, which gets replaced by the actual bulletin on the release date.

A "critical" patch is defined by Microsoft as "a vulnerability whose exploitation could allow the propagation of an Internet worm without user action".  As a general rule, all critical patches should be installed as soon as possible. Also, if you have a managed service support plan with us, all patches are tested before installation, and we are tracking the updates for you.  Note that there are many other types of updates, and if we are doing managed updates, the blind updates through automated updates will be disabled.

Heads up for Planning - The last day for support for Windows Server 2003 is July 14, 2015.  Any servers running this operating system will be out of compliance for security on that date.  Security patches for Windows XP were discontinued last April and you should not be running any of these systems on your network at this time.
