Parents,
Walton High School is in the process of increasing the use of technology
in the classroom to support instruction. Over two years ago a group of
teachers from Walton visited several schools in other parts of the United
States. These teachers witnessed many of the advantages of using
technology to reinforce concepts being taught to students in those schools.
Last spring we started the initiative to improve the amount of technology
used in the classroom for learning. The Walton Foundation has been a
tremendous help by providing an iPad for each classroom. In a survey to
parents and students in the spring of 2014, Apple was the platform of choice
for student use. We are trying to use one platform as it is extremely difficult
for teachers to find apps to support instruction that will work on all platforms.
After holding several meetings, we are ready to encourage parents to
provide a technical device to their student(s) for use in the classroom. We
are asking the teachers to choose apps on the Apple platform, therefore, an
Apple device for your student(s) would be the most useful. The device that
was purchased for each classroom is an iPad with 64 gig of memory. The
amount of memory the student device should have will depend on how many
different ways the student will be using the device besides work in the
classroom, i.e. watching movies, etc. You may also want to consider if you
are going to purchase digital textbooks for your student. When purchasing
the device, I would recommend that the student's name be engraved on the
device and that you purchase a protection case for the device to protect
against damage. After purchasing the device be sure to record all identifying
model and device numbers (found in settings) for your records. There is also information concerning insurance found on the Walton WEB site and the Walton Foundation WEB site.
We will continue to offer support for instruction with assignments on paper, and students will be provided a hard copy of the work if they do not have access
to a technical device.
Thank you for your support,
Judy McNeill, Principal
Walton High School
