The "Say 'Yes!' To An iPad In Every Classroom" Campaign A Big Success!!
The Foundation is excited to announce that we were able to purchase another 20 iPads, which now provides an iPad in Every Classroom at Walton. It is because or your continued generosity and the support of community members like Zeal and CCA and B Publishing that we were able to complete this portion of our campaign.
A few of the teachers and staff will be trading up their current iPads for the news ones, so their old iPads will be used as loaners during school hours for student check-out starting in January. We would like to complete our campaign by purchasing another 20 iPads to serve as additional loaners to students during key classroom presentations and testing.
If you have a used iPad that you would like to donate for student-use, please contact us. The more students who are able to participate in the One-To-One program, the more successful the initiative will be.
Many parents have asked about working together to secure the best price for their iPads. We think this is a great idea and encourage neighborhoods, clubs and/or friend groups to work together to negotiate the best deal. The Foundation will pass along any sales of which we are aware, such as this Black Friday deal.
To learn more about refurbished and warranted iPads, with a 10% discount for Walton students, please visit Experimac in Sandy Springs.

Thank you to everyone who attended last week's Education Forum. We also want to express our gratitude to Dr. Dana Rickman, Principal Judy McNeill, Mr. Drew Adams, Ms. Tina Link and Mr. John Palmer for updating parents on the current education funding changes in Georgia and Cobb County.
The answers to the questions asked in the 11/3 "411" are as follows:
1. Do you know how many teachers Walton High School has lost since 2008?
A: Walton has lost 19 teachers since 2008. In addition, we have lost .5 counselors and 2 custodians.
2. Do you know how many more students are in a freshman language arts class in 2015 vs. 2008?
A: The average class size in 2008 for a writing class was 21 students. The average class size for that same class in 2015 is 28 students.
3. Do you know the impact a larger class size can have on a student?
A: Students do not get to spend as much time with a teacher if there are too many students in a class. In addition, students do not get an opportunity to have as many class discussions, writing assignments and detailed feedback from teachers. Walton teachers have seen a drop in the quality of writing in College Prep classes over the last couple of years. The cumulative effects of the reduced interaction can be significant over a short period of time, but can be catastrophic over a student's K-12 education.
4. Do you know the changes in instruction the teachers have had to make to accommodate a larger class size?
A: Teachers have had to reduce writing assignments because they do not have the time to properly grade the papers. In addition, science labs have had to be cut because it is simply not safe to conduct some of the experiments in a crowded classroom. Because the classrooms are crowded, interactive discussions have to be limited to classrooms where there is room for students to move.

Health & Wellness Update
In an effort to keep our students and faculty healthy, we will be passing out FREE hand sanitizers to the students during lunch periods on 12/2. We hope this initiative will help keep our school community well during end-of-semester testing and finals.
We are also so excited to announce that the Clorox Co. has agreed to donate TWO palates of Clorox wipes to the Foundation's Health & Wellness Committee. We will be distributing these wipes to every classroom to use as needed throughout the cold and flu season. We would also like to coordinate student volunteers to clean desks twice a week during the winter months to ensure we eliminate as many germs as possible.
If you would like to volunteer for this effort and/or coordinate the student volunteers, please contact the Foundation at hillsinga@yahoo.com.

Academic Planning in Naviance
Part 8 of a series,
"Naviance Tips for using Family Connections"
This week we will look at the Academic Planning features under the COURSES tab where students review the course descriptions of all the courses offered at Walton. Open the WHS Academic Catalog to get started. Courses that appeal to them can be saved on their "Interesting Courses List" for further exploration. The students will work with their counselor to develop a master plan of coursework that will assure success in the major and career they have selected to pursue. Once a student has completed their master schedule, they can scan this plan in the College Power Score section. This score indicates how well the coursework on the student's master plan meets the rigor requirements of Highly Selective Colleges. This score serves as a guide to selecting courses at Walton that correlate with the student's career aspirations.
Students can set goals, make up to-do lists, and view tasks assigned to them by their counselors in the MY PLANNER sections. And, in the ABOUT ME tab, students can review the lists of possible careers and colleges they are considering, keep a journal, start developing a portfolio and create a resume using a great resume building tool. This tab also holds their student profile, account info, and their test scores for PSAT, SAT, ACT, SATII, AP and many other assessments that are reported to the school. From keeping up with their weekly assignments to planning for college applications and job opportunities, students can use this feature to organize their life!
