WALTON'S EDUCATION FORUM

1.  Do you know how many teachers Walton High School has lost since 2008?
2.  Do you know how many more students are in a freshman language arts class in 2015 vs. 2008?
3.  Do you know the impact a larger class size can have on a student?
4.  Do you know the changes in instruction the teachers have had to make to accommodate a larger class size?

The Walton High School PTSA and Foundation are partnering to sponsor an Education Forum on 11/10/15 at 7:00 pm in the Walton Theater.  You will have an opportunity to hear from Walton teachers about how class sizes have impacted their curriculum and delivery of instruction.  We hope a representative from every household will attend the meeting.

MORE One-To-One Updates

The CCSD  is committed to increasing the access points in the current building to improve connectivity as we launch the one-to-one iPad initiative.  We encourage students who already have iPads to bring them to school so we can continue to test/work through these issues.

Walton's Technology Committee (WTC) created a database of the technical issues teachers experience when implementing one-to-one, using an app, or connecting their iPad's to Apple TV.  Teachers use the google form located under the Media Center's website to document each time they experience an issue.  Nikki Patel (who is our technology specialist), along with CCSD's technology department, are working on developing solutions for all the issues that arise.  Over the past couple of weeks we have solved several major issues teachers were experiencing.

In addition, the WTC is in the process of developing a team of teachers (one from each major subject) to investigate potentially useful apps for their subject.  These teachers will help develop a clearinghouse list of apps that are useful for the classroom and approved by the CCSD technology department.  Once developed, the clearinghouse will be found on the Media Center's website.

Finally, many parents have expressed an interest in downloading textbooks for their children. In case you missed it, please find a list of text books by clicking here

Haven't Had Time To Get Your Flu Shot?

The Walton HS Foundation can help!  Please stop by Walton on Wednesday, November 4th, to get your flu shot for only $15.  All Walton parents and staff are encouraged to participate.   We will announce a date when students can receive the flu shot at the same price at the MedPost clinic by Target.

Cash or checks will also be accepted, but exact payment is requested as change will not be available.  The flu shots will be offered during WEB in the atrium outside the theater from 12:45pm - 3:30pm.

Students will have an opportunity to "taste test" our Antioxidant Smoothies on Thursday, 11/5. Starting on Wednesday, November 11, we will be offering smoothies for sale during our WEB Wednesdays. This will provide a delicious, healthy option after school for both students and staff.

Quarterly Coffee Information

Invitations have been sent to all COMPLETE and BASIC Foundation Sponsors to attend an informational coffee with Mrs. Judy McNeill,
Friday, November 13th at 9:30 am in the Media Center.  Mrs. McNeill will be discussing possible education funding changes and how it relates to Walton High School, as well as providing updates on the One-to-One iPad initiative and the school construction.  For this quarter's coffee, we are trying something new.   Our attendees have an opportunity to submit questions for Mrs. McNeil to address.

THANK YOU.......

To all of the families who donated school supplies for the Teacher's Carnival held on 10/28.   In addition to lots of much needed items, we were able to distribute more than 240 boxes of tissue to all of the Walton teachers and department work rooms.

Another big thank you to the volunteers who helped with set up, clean up and all of the in-between. The event would not have been possible without you...and our wonderful chairs, Debra Tant and Ellen Melcher.  We appreciate you!!

College Exploration in Naviance
Part 6 of a series,
"Naviance Tips for using Family Connections"

Family Connections offers an enormous amount of information on Colleges with several ways to search and screen schools.  From the COLLEGE tab, students can begin their exploration by searching on colleges they think they want to consider.  Individual college pages include videos, information on application types and deadlines, admissions info, financial aid, majors and departments and even residence halls and dining services.  From this page, your student can link through to the colleges' website to start an on-line application, request more information or schedule a tour of the campus.  If the student wants to continue exploring this school, they can add it to their list of "Colleges I am Considering" for easy access to their research.

Another way to explore possible colleges is to use the SUPERMATCH Search.  Students can use over 20 search criteria to find the schools that are the best match for them.  They can set up the search preferences, weighting how important the criteria is to them.  There is also a comparison function in this feature that allows the student to compare colleges that they are considering, based on their individual priorites.  A "Save" feature allows the student to save their search so they can refine it later. The Advanced College Search is another screening tool that can be used to identify good candidate school for further exploration.

Next week, Naviance Tips will cover the Family Connection tools available to research and evaluate colleges on the student's "Colleges I am Considering" list.
