Get a Jump Start on Flu Season

The Walton HS Foundation is working to help keep our students healthy. The Foundation's Health & Wellness committee is thrilled to announce the following initiatives during Cold and Flu Season:

1) Flu shotsWe are very grateful to MedPost for offering flu shots to all staff and Walton parents on Wednesday, November 4th. The cost is only $15 per person. Please check back next week.  We will announce a date when students can receive the flu shot at the same price at the MedPost clinic by Target.

Cash or checks will also be accepted, but exact payment is requested as change will not be available.  The flu shots will be offered during WEB in the atrium outside the theatre from 12:45pm - 3:30pm.

2)  Antioxidant SmoothiesStarting on Wednesday, November 11, we will be offering smoothies for sale during our WEB Wednesdays. This will provide an alternate, healthy option after school for students (and staff, too!).

3)  Handy Hand SanitizersWe will be distributing individual hand sanitizers that can connect to a backpack for easy access when needed. These will go out in late November.

Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for your support!
EDUCATION FORUM

The Walton High School PTSA and Foundation are partnering to sponsor an Education Forum on 11/10/15 at 7:00 pm in the Walton Theatre.  Our goals for this meeting are to educate parents on the current status of education funding at both a State and local level.  We will hear how State and local funding will directly impact Walton and our feeder schools.  This will be an important and timely opportunity to become informed and engaged.

Quarterly Coffee Information

The Foundation would like to invite all COMPLETE and BASIC Foundation Sponsors to attend an informational coffee with Mrs. Judy McNeill,
Friday, November 13th at 9:30am in the Media Center.   Mrs. McNeill will be discussing possible education funding changes and how it relates to Walton High School, as well as providing updates on the One-to- One iPad initiative and the school construction.  For this quarter's coffee, we are trying something new.  Please email any questions by Monday, November 9th you would like Mrs. McNeill to address by clicking here.

This is a great opportunity to have any of your questions or concerns addressed!  Be on the lookout for your e-vite.  If you would like to attend the coffee, but are not currently a sponsor of the Foundation, please click here.
From Walton's Nurse

As we enter cold & flu season, I wanted to share some information:

Just using hand sanitizer may not be enough to get rid of viruses. HAND WASHING is the best practice in PREVENTION.  Wash hands with warm water and soap for at least 15 seconds (sing Happy Birthday slowly), rinse well, and dry thoroughly with a paper towel.  In public places, use a dry paper towel to turn off the water faucet and to open the door as you exit.  Other good hygiene practices include: not sharing food and drinks, sanitizing surfaces and eating utensils, and staying home when ill.  This will help reduce the spread of communicable illnesses.

The Walton Foundation is so excited to announce that we have received our check from Zeal Kitchen & Bar to purchase 5 additional iPads!  Help us achieve 100% success in the "iPad In Every Classroom" campaign from today until November 4th, as 5% of all profits will be donated directly to the WHSF to purchase iPads for the Walton faculty. We hope you will choose Zeal every opportunity you can, over the remaining 7 days, to enjoy great food and great atmosphere...all in support of Walton and our students.
                              Thank you, Zeal!

Naviance and ROADTRIP NATION
Part 5 in a series of "Naviance Tips for Parents"

A final tool in the Careers TAB is ROADTRIP NATION.  In 2001, a group of friends took a road trip with a simple idea: If you talk to people who do what they love, you will get a better understanding of how to build a life that you love.  This adventure sparked a documentary series that has been airing on Public TV for over 11 years.

The ROADTRIP NATION Interview Archive in Naviance contains over 3500 student-centered videos of interviews with local, national and international leaders. These videos show leaders  candidly discussing hardships and successes to illustrate how they have created a meaningful life on their own terms.  Interviewees range from CEO's of Fortune 500 companies to filmmakers, scientist, sportswriters, non-profits, entrepreneurs...and everything in between.  Students can see how successful people made decisions and overcame challenges and use this to prepare for their own lives. Interviews are grouped by interests and themes and can also be found by searching under specific careers.

So, make some time soon to watch a few episodes with your student and discuss how they can apply the lessons learned by others to focus their own career exploration on Naviance.
