A message from our School Board Representative, Scott Sweeney:
The Walton High School rebuilding project took an important step forward during the Board of Education meeting last Wednesday. Superintendent Ragsdale and his administration delivered their recommendation to the board to proceed with the Stage I build on the academic building. After a brief administration presentation and board discussion, the recommendation was placed on the Board of Education meeting agenda for consideration during the Board's April 30th meeting.
Should the Board approve the Superintendent's recommendation, construction is anticipated to commence immediately at the end of the current school year.
Those familiar with the Walton campus know the complexities of this project including the limited buildable land and parking, the challenging topography, wetlands, the simultaneous operation of the existing school and construction of the new school, site work, demolition, debris removal, and project staging. Another challenge is to serve the current student body without using more portable classrooms and while maintaining as much on-campus parking as possible.
Demographic studies conducted by the district showed significant enrollment growth which also needed to be considered as plans were completed. Unfortunately, these planning processes take time and often much longer than desired to get the needed result.
I look forward to a positive result on April 30th and sincerely appreciate the countless hours and effort by all who have assisted in getting this project to where it is today.
