Good Bye Charlie!
Charlie rides across the Rainbow Bridge

Unfortunately,  Charlie was found dead in the pasture on Thanksgiving morning. This "black beauty" was a special boy. Charlie came to us when his owner could no longer ride and wanted Charlie to continue to have a full life. He had completed his rehab, was up for adoption, and a young family was interested in giving him that full life. Well-mannered and always polite Charlie showed many of us what a well-trained horse was capable of. He was a joy to ride and always welcomed visitors; who he was hoping might offer him a hug. We will miss Charlie and his gentle ways.

We gave thanks this holiday for the opportunity to work with such a wonderful boy. Charlie left us way too soon but his memory will be with us forever.

Welcome to Pony Tails Newsletter.

Hi, we are Theresa Warrell and Steve Boice, co-founders of Horse'n Around Rescue Ranch and Foundation. We are excited to share our mission as well as all the wonderful things that are happening here.

In this issue we are going to introduce you to another wonderful horse looking for a forever home, recap our day at the Tucson Pet Expo, brag about Dianna's new video that highlights some of our horses, touch upon the work we are doing in the horsemanship training classes, say goodbye to a dear friend, and encourage you to go see the beautiful Christmas Trees at the Mall.

We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year.
We Found Our Forever Home
Patron - We first introduced Patron in our October newsletter when he was "Looking For A Forever Home" and now he has found one! Look for Patron in parades around the state and on local trails.  We are so happy for him and wish him a long and happy life with his new owner, but we will miss our beautiful boy.

Shilo and Lucky have been adopted into the same forever home. Shilo (left) is smart, athletic, and beautiful! Lucky is young and willing and yes... handsome. We are celebrating their start to a new
 and wonderful life.

We Need A Forever Home
Meet Badger:

Such a handsome boy - This stocky 14 year old, 15.2 hands gelding quarter horse was a great working horse. Badger still loves to work cattle, lead a trail ride, or pony a young horse in training in small doses. U
nfortunately, after being kicked in the knee and breaking a bone, his work life is limited.
B
adger's knee is large with calcium  restricting his range of motion a little. But, as you can see in his picture, he is still an awesome trail horse for an easy riding person who sticks to flat land riding only a couple of hours.
Tucson Pet Expo
Sierra Vista Herald Article
We were not sure if we really were a good fit for a "pet" expo but we went anyway and, according to Dana Cole's article in the Sierra Vista Herald, we were quite a hit. Our ambassador Lady made us a hit by showing everyone what a well behaved, friendly, and well trained horse looks like. She was the only horse there and drew quite a crowd. Bruce Norton of the Jabez Ranch Horsemanship and our Manuela Curtis put Lady through her paces, demonstrated natural horsemanship, and answered a lot of questions. This was an awesome and unexpected chance to get the word out to a larger audience about what we do here at Horse'n Around Rescue. One of my favorite pictures is the one of Lady graciously making friends with another four legged (dog) visitor.

We made bookmarks from a photo that Mickey Sizemore took and we must have passed out better than 1000 bookmarks. So we were definitely noticed.

This picture shows Bruce and Manuela with Lady during the demonstration.

Horsemanship Training Ground School Classes

We had a lot of great Horsemanship Training Ground School Classes (first introduced in our August newsletter) this fall, as you can see in the pictures below. These classes serve several purposes: help educate volunteers how to be safe around horses, assess the horses' strengths and weaknesses with regard to behavior, determine the horses' disposition, teach the horses respectful behavior, and prepare them for work under saddle.  The horsemanship training helps us to determine what type of forever home is suitable.  In class, we emphasize "desensitization" which helps remove the "spook factor."  Volunteers get the horses used to a lead rope being thrown over their back, a plastic bag blowing across the ground, a flag

blowing in the wind, and of course the "car wash".

We still have room for you to join us in our classes! This class is great whether you have been around horses before or not - it is a safe, casual learning environment for all involved.

While we are getting our horses more comfortable in their surroundings we are also learning the personalities and abilities of each horse. This is a vital part of matching a horse with an owner. We can determine if the horse needs a strong rider and needs to be worked out a lot or if the horse is gentle and just likes a little walk or jog. Some horses can't be ridden but still need good ground manners to make a wonderful companion horse.

We are always happy to add more volunteers to our "family". So if you have ever thought about volunteering, now is the time. We have something for every level of experience.

Walker Method of Integrated Healing

Dianna Walker-McPhail developed and administers the Walker Method of Integrated Healing. She is the author of On the Right Lead about the Mind-Body Connection. Dianna has saved many horses from retirement or even worse. She has integrated Bowen for Animals with Jin Shin Jyutsu, Intuitive Medicine, and other therapies to set equines up to heal themselves. The rescue is mentioned several times. Look for Forrest, Jasper, Painted Beauty, Love, Hearty, Elli, and of course Leah's horse Hershey! Enjoy.

A BIG THANK YOU goes to Dianna for helping so many of our horses reach their potential and enjoy a better quality of life!
